Annual HYP Meet Gears Track and Field for Championship Season

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard track and field heads to New Haven, Conn., for the annual HYP tri-meet against Yale and Princeton this Saturday, Feb. 15 at Coxe Cage. It will be the final indoor regular season meet for the Crimson, as the squad gears up against its biggest rivals for the Ivy League Championship March 1-2.

Meet History

This weekend marks the 60th annual meeting between the three teams on the men's side and the 35th meeting in 36 years for the women, who look to extend their streak atop the Bulldogs to eight years in the annual showdown. The men have 20 wins in that span, ahead of Yale's 11 wins, but behind Princeton's 28, and look to beat Yale for the fifth year in a row.

Last Year

Three school records fell a year ago, as both the Harvard men and women fell to Princeton while defeating Yale. Adabelle Ekechukwu posted the best performance of the day, becoming the first woman in Ivy League history to eclipse the 20-meter barrier in the weight throw (20.11m, 65-11.75). Danielle Barbian broke her own school record in the 60 meter dash (7.59) and Sydnie Leroy registered a program-best 3.91m (12-10.00) in the pole vault event.

Rewriting History

The Crimson has been rewriting the record book this season, as four school records have been broken. Senior Maksim Korolev boasts both the Harvard and Ivy League records in the 3000 (7:51.52) and 5000 meter (13:42.56) events. Watch the outstanding finish in the 5K here.

The women's 4x400 relay squad (Jade Miller, Autumne Franklin, Jackie Modesett and Gabrielle Scott) has twice broken the Harvard record, most recently at the Collegiate Invitational at the Armory with a time of 3:39.49.

Junior Danielle Barbian has also broken her own school record multiple times this season in the 60-meter dash, most recently at the Collegiate Invitational, crossing in 7.48.

Scouting Yale

Hosting its fourth meet of the indoor season, Yale will be strongest in the sprints. Freshman Marc-Andre Alexandre has recorded the fastest time in the Ivy League in the 400m and the second-fastest overall in the 200 meter. Senior Dana Lindberg is coming off a personal-best time in the 60 meter dash a week ago.

A week ago, sophomore Mackenzie Mathews claimed a first-place finish in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.94, tying her personal-best and good for third all-time at Yale.

Scouting Princeton

The Princeton men have won the HYP meet every year since 1989 (Princeton did not compete in 2002, '03, '04), a streak of 22 consecutive wins. A week ago, the team split to compete at the Collegiate Invitational, Valentine Invitational and the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup. Among the top performances were senior Damon McLean (triple jump), winning at the Armory with a leap of 15.71 (51-6.50) and senior Michael Williams, joining the sub-four-minute-mile club with a 3:59.63 for the ninth-best collegiate time.

On the women's side, the Tigers are seeking their fifth-straight HYP victory. Last weekend, junior Emily de La Bruyere won the mile (4:50.08) and 3K (9:39.06) events at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup.
