Box Score Jimmy Vesey had a career-high four points in a 6-1 win over Colgate Saturday (Gil Talbot).
HAMILTON, N.Y. – Harvard's top line of Jimmy Vesey, Tyler Moy and Kyle Criscuolo accounted for 10 points Saturday night, as the Crimson men's hockey team (12-4-2, 8-3-2 ECAC) skated past No. 15/13 Colgate (14-8-2, 6-4-2 ECAC), 6-1, Saturday at Starr Rink.
The fifth win this season over a ranked team and the fifth six-goal game of the year for the Crimson saw Jimmy Vesey and Kyle Criscuolo each recorded four points on two goals and two assists, career-highs for both, while linemate Tyler Moy contributed two assists. Victor Newell also had a pair of assists on the night for the third multi-point game of his career.
The opening period passed without either team finding the net, but the Crimson offense was the aggressor throughout, posting a 14-9 shots advantage. Colgate was whistled for the first penalty at 7:52 when Tyson Spink was sent away for roughing. Harvard's power play unit put the pressure on the Raiders, ripping four shots on net, but Charlie Finn came up with each stop for Colgate. Harvard took the period's next two penalties, a pair of interference calls, but Steve Michalek made six stops and the Crimson penalty kill unit kept the 0-0 score intact.
The second period saw a slew of penalties called for both teams, as well as three goals being scored to give Harvard a 2-1 lead at the break. Colgate netted the first goal at 2:09 in what looked to be a covered puck by Michalek, but the Raiders continued to poke at it with Tim Harrison getting the touch that forced it across the goal line.
Harvard evened the game at 1-1 at 9:20. With the face-off to the left of Finn in the Colgate zone, Moy made a strong move to win the draw and push past Mike Panowyk. From the left post, Moy flipped a pass in front of the net where Brian Hart fired a shot past Finn for his sixth of the year.
The referees began a busy stretch following the goal, as five penalties were called, two on Colgate and three on Harvard over a 3:31 stretch. Harvard found itself down 5-on-3 midway through the mayhem of whistles, but the Crimson penalty kill made numerous blocks on Colgate shots and killed off the Raiders prime opportunity. Colgate was then called for its second too many men on the ice penalty at 11:50, setting the stage for a Crimson power play.
The man-advantage led to Harvard's second goal, a coast-to-coast effort that started with Michalek feeding Jimmy Vesey a pass in the defensive zone and the Crimson's top scorer beating Finn on a right-to-left deke in front of the goaltender. In the offensive zone, Vesey and Criscuolo used a nice give-and-go play to create the scoring opportunity. Credited with the assist on the play, Michalek has three in his career, with this his first since last February against Yale.
Harvard added to its lead with another power play strike at 1:23 of the third. The Crimson collected the puck in the neutral zone with Victor Newell passing across ice to Vesey and him leading Criscuolo into the Raiders' zone. Criscuolo skated through the left side of the zone and at a tough angle to the right of Finn, ripped a shot that broke his stick, but beat the Colgate netminder to give Harvard a 3-1 lead.
The Crimson tacked on two more goals, with Vesey netting his second of the game and Ellis tipping in his second in as many nights, bringing the lead to 5-1. Vesey goal was set up by Moy and Criscuolo digging the puck out from behind the net and Vesey creating his own space in front for a wrister. Ellis, who scored on Friday on a tip-in, deflected Clay Anderson's blast from the right point past Finn, chasing the goalie from the game. Newell earned the second assist on the play.
Harvard has just one game on the docket at home against Union, Friday, Jan. 30, before opening the 63rd Annual Beanpot at TD Garden on Monday, Feb. 2 against No. 3/3 Boston University.
