CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Steve Moundou-Missi posted a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, but the Harvard men's basketball team fell to Yale in front of a sold-out Lavietes Pavilion crowd Friday evening, 62-52.
With the loss, the Crimson (20-7, 10-3 Ivy) slips to one-game behind the Bulldogs (22-8, 11-2) in the Ivy League standings with one game to play. Harvard will host Brown on Senior Night Saturday at 6 p.m., while Yale will visit Dartmouth at 7 p.m. The Crimson will face the Bears live on the CBS Sports Network.
Harvard shot only 32.7 percent (18-of-55) for the game and was 2-of-17 (.118) from 3-point range. Wesley Saunders had 11 points and seven boards, and Siyani Chambers added 10 points and six assists. For the Bulldogs, Javier Duren led the way with a 22-point effort, shooting 6-of-11 from the floor, while grabbing nine rebounds.
Harvard took a 5-2 edge on an Agunwa Okolie dunk but the Bulldogs scored on consecutive possessions for a 7-5 lead. Saunders helped the Crimson keep pace with Yale, tying the score at 11 at the free throw line before hitting a tough jumper in the paint to put Harvard back on top, 13-11. A jumper by Moundou-Missi pushed the advantage to 15-11, before the Bulldogs charged back once again to take a 20-15 margin on Justin Sears' 3-pointer.
Jonah Travis scored the Crimson's final four points of the half with his free throws with just 1.5 seconds remaining bringing the score to 22-19. Just like the first time the teams met it was the defense for both sides that stood out, with Harvard shooting just 7-of-25 and 0-of-8 from 3 while Yale went 8-of-22 from the floor, but 4-of-9 from deep.
Yale opened the second half with a 13-4 run and took a 35-23 margin on long jumper from Matt Townsend. Chambers knocked down the team's first 3-pointer to get the crowd back into it, and Travis made a block at the defensive end before nailing a jumper on offense to force a Yale timeout. Moundou-Missi kept the run going with an and-one, cutting the deficit to 35-31.
After the Bulldogs had regained a 43-35 edge Moundou-Missi scored four straight points to bring Harvard within 43-39 with his dunk off a Chambers alley-oop electrifying the crowd. Chambers got to the line to make it a one-possession game, 43-41, but jumpers by Duran and Townsend kept the lead at six, 47-41. The Bulldogs matched free throws from Moundou-Missi with a Duran triple, and closed the game shooting 10-of-12 at the line for the 62-52 win.
