STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Kicking off a five-game road trip, Harvard men's soccer picked up its first victory of the season, 2-1, over Stony Brook Sunday at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium.

Jake Freeman scored the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute, beating the Seawolves' (1-3-1) goalkeeper with a left-footed shot from the top of the box after a feed from Tim Schmoll and Cesar Farias. The strike was his second of the season.

Philip Fleischman opened the scoring for the Crimson (1-2-1) in the 27th minute, heading the ball across the goal line after Michael Klain's long throw-in. The goal was the first of the year for the senior.

Leading 1-0 at the break, Harvard fired nine of its 11 shots in the second period. Despite the Crimson's second-half advantage in shots, Stony Brook leveled the score at 1-1 in the 77th minute after Martin Giordano headed home a cross from Alejandro Fritz and Thibault Duval.

Less than five minutes later, Freeman put the Crimson ahead for good with his strike from 20 yards. Stony Brook recorded a pair of shots within the final minute, but Harvard's defense kept the Seawolves out to claim the win.

Harvard heads to the west coast for a 7:30 p.m. PT contest with Seattle on Friday, Sept. 18 before taking on sixth-ranked Washington Sunday, Sept. 20 at noon PT. The latter contest can be seen on the Pac-12 Network.
