Seniors Xavier Gonzalez (left) and Electra Lang (right) earned Phi Beta Kappa honors.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Men's tennis senior Xavier Gonzalez, and women's lightweight crew senior Electra Lang have been selected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society, Harvard announced this week.

Gonzalez and Lang were among the 'Senior 48' selected to Alpha Iota, Harvard's Phi Beta Kappa chapter, in the fall.

Gonzalez, a mathematics concentrator, was recently awarded a Rhodes Scholarship, and plans to pursue a Master of Science in mathematics at the University of Oxford. A native of Houston, Texas, Gonzalez is a four-year member of the tennis team who holds an all-time 15-4 singles record thus far in his career.

Lang, an English concentrator, was named to the Intercollegiate Rowing All-Academic Team and has been a key member of women's lightweight crew, serving as coxswain of the varsity four at the Head of the Charles last month.

Former student-athlete Olivia Herrington (sailing) also earned Phi Beta Kappa honors.

To earn induction into Harvard's chapter of the nation's oldest honor society, students must have completed two and a half years of undergraduate study at Harvard College and submit copies of his/her transcript, along with two letters of recommendation. After narrowing the choices, the selection committee makes its decision off a variety of factors, including grade point average, difficulty of courses taken and research participation.
