CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Getting career advice from a top industry professional, Jordan Schlachter '90, the chief marketing officer for the National Basketball Association Players' Association (NBAPA) and President of National Basketball Players Incorporated, met with a group of Harvard student-athletes as part of the Harvard student-athlete chief marketing officer (CMO) initiative on Wednesday night at the Murr Center.
The Harvard CMO initiative is a comprehensive program providing leadership opportunities across all sports. In partnership with Harvard Athletics marketing, student athlete CMO's provide marketing and promotional support to drive awareness and engagement for their teams.
"It was a great experience getting to hear Mr. Schlachter talk about his career," said Bradley Fusco, a junior forward on the women's hockey team. "One thing that I learned was that when we are thinking about our own teams, it is important to keep your team goal in mind when trying to get your teammates to rally around you. Mr. Schlacher talked about how this is not only important to get teams to win, but it is also important when running a business."
Schlachter, a former Harvard basketball player, is the first CMO in the history of the NBAPA, and he has spent the last 10 years working in the NBA in a variety of roles. He has also spent time with the New York Knicks, MTV and United States Olympic Committee.
"Jordan is at the top of his field, and it was fantastic to hear his breadth of knowledge and expertise," noted Noah Reimers, a junior running back on the football team. "He provided advice and tips of the trade that can be useful across industries, and I appreciated how gracious he was with his time."
Both Fusco and Reimers are a part of the Harvard CMO initiative, which spans each of Harvard's 42 varsity sports.
