Women Advance to ACC Final, Team Wins Lark Invitational in Week Four

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A victory at the Lark Invitational and a pair of top-three finishes in the team's first inter-conference action comprised another excellent weekend for Harvard sailing.

First-place results by both Crimson boats in the Lark Invitational's sixth and final race allowed Harvard to rise to the top of the standings at the regatta, which was hosted by Tufts. The team edged runner-up MIT by a single point for the win, its fourth of the season.

In the A-division, first-year Cordelia Burn and junior Cindy Tian finished with 34 points to place second, while teammates Sophia Montgomery and Lily Bartlett were the top finishers in the B-division with 24 points. Montgomery, a first year, and Bartlett, a sophomore, were the first to the finish line in each of the regatta's last two races. The regatta, which began on Saturday and featured 20 teams, was initially scheduled to continue Sunday, but low winds prevented any further racing.

Further south in Norfolk, Va., Harvard claimed third place in its semifinal at the Women's Atlantic Coast Championship, a result good enough to qualify the team for the final. A total of 33 schools from across the country were split into two semifinal heats, with the top-nine finishers in each earning bids to the final. Tulane and Yale were the top qualifiers in the two semifinal rounds. The Championship will be decided Oct. 16-17, with Harvard serving as the host school.

Senior captain, Emma Kaneti joined with sophomore Marleigh Belsley for races one through 12, and Marbella Marlo for races 13-17, to ultimately finish fourth in the A-division with 119 points. In the B-division, sophomore skipper Sarah Burn and classmate Corinne Lee notched two first-place finishes to place third with 86 points.

Rounding out the weekend for the Crimson was the Danmark Invitational, hosted by the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Here, Harvard grabbed another top-three result, finishing tied with Boston College in second place with 191 points. The Crimson ultimately placed third in the multi-conference competition by virtue of a tiebreaker. Yale won the regatta with 163 points. Henry Burnes and Carolyn Wang enjoyed a terrific showing, finishing as the second-ranked B-boat with 84 points, while Eli Burnes and Pomaika'i Ogata were ninth in the A-division.

Up Next:
The Crimson get right back at it next weekend, Oct. 9-10 with four regattas on the schedule. Harvard will race at Bowdoin's Hewitt Trophy, the Stu Nelson Trophy hosted by Connecticut College, the Smith Trophy at MIT and the qualifying round of the Coed Atlantic Coast Championships.
