No. 22/RV Football Topples Cornell, 24-10; Moves to 4-0

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Three second half touchdowns, including two from junior running back Aaron Shampklin, powered No. 22/RV Harvard (4-0, 2-0 Ivy) past Cornell (0-4, 0-2 Ivy), 24-10, on Saturday afternoon at Harvard Stadium.

After struggling to find its rhythm on offense in the opening half, the Crimson faced a halftime deficit for the first time this season, trailing 7-3. The second half began on a much different note, however, with Harvard coming out of the locker room with a pair of visibly contrasting, yet equally effective touchdown drives on its first two possessions.

First, a methodical 10-play, 75-yard march culminated in a one-yard touchdown from Shampklin, giving the Crimson its first lead of the contest, 10-7. Then, after a Big Red field-goal knotted the game at 10, Harvard struck quickly on its next possession when sophomore quarterback Charlie Dean connected with senior wide-out B.J. Watson for a 75-yard strike to make the score 17-10 with 5:14 remaining in the third quarter.

A couple of key fourth down stops late in the second half helped to preserve the advantage for the Crimson. With Cornell driving in the red zone as the clock dwindled in the third quarter, Harvard stuffed a QB-sneak attempt from Richie Kenney on the seven-yard line. Later, with the Big Red hoping to mount one last scoring chance, an incompletion on 4th and 16 gave Harvard the ball back with just 1:58 left on the clock.

Two plays later, Shampklin broke free down the left sideline for a game-clinching 35-yard touchdown.

Harvard Highlights
  • B.J. Watson's 75-yard touchdown pass from Charlie Dean was Harvard's longest scoring play of the season and the Crimson's eighth touchdown of 31 or more yards on the year. The play ties for the 16th longest touchdown pass in school history.
  • Shampklin's two-touchdown performance was his third multi-touchdown game of the season. The junior now has six touchdowns on the year.
  • James Herring and Andrew Irwin led the team in tackles on the day with nine apiece.
  • With 7:45 on the clock in the second quarter, Herring blocked a punt off the foot of Cornell's Koby Kiefer. It was the first blocked punt for the Crimson since its 2019 contest versus Penn.
  • Jonah Lipel is now 3-for-3 on field goal attempts this season after connecting from 20 yards on his only attempt of the day.
Game Notes
  • With the victory, Harvard improves to 49-34-2 all-time against Cornell. It is the Crimson's second straight victory over the Big Red.
  • Harvard moves to 4-0 for the first time since 2016.
  • The Crimson are now 2-0 on the season in Ivy play.
  • At the time of game's end, Harvard stands as just one of 10 unbeaten teams in the FCS.
  • With Shampklin's 118-yard day on the ground, Harvard is now 69-14 since 2000 when a player rushes for 100 yards.
