Forbes, Turner Lead Women’s Basketball’s Rally Past Boston University, 82-79

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior McKenzie Forbes scored 26 points – including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds left – and first-year Harmoni Turner netted 24 points as Harvard University women's basketball erased a 19-point second half deficit to rally past Boston University, 82-79, on Saturday afternoon at Lavietes Pavilion.
 
Trailing 50-31 with 6:45 to go in the third quarter, the Crimson (2-4) used a 33-13 run to take a 64-63 lead on the visiting Terriers (2-4) with 6:50 to play in the fourth quarter. With the two teams trading baskets down the stretch, Harvard scored the game's final five points in the last minute, including the go-ahead 3-pointer from Forbes just to the left of the top of the key to seal the win.
 
Forbes scored a game and season-high 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting and 6-of-11 3-pointers while Turner netted a season-high 24 points, hitting 4-of-6 triples. Sophomore Lola Mullaney tallied 14 points and made 4-of-4 free throws inside of the final 3:31. Junior Maggie McCarthy grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and senior Tess Sussman dished out a team-best four assists.
 
In the third quarter, BU gained a 50-31 advantage with 6:45 to go in the frame before the Crimson began its comeback. Turner initiated the rally with back-to-back 3-pointers before a triple from sophomore Kennedy Heath cut it to 50-40. Another seven points form Turner trimmed the margin to 57-53 with 28 seconds left in the quarter, and Harvard remained within 59-53 heading to the fourth.
 
A pair of 3-pointers from Turner and a triple from Forbes helped Harvard take a 64-63 lead with 6:50 to go for its first lead since early in the second quarter. Harvard outscored BU, 33-13, to erase its 19-point deficit. Seven points from Mullaney kept the Crimson up 75-74 with 2:56 remaining. After BU pulled ahead 79-77 with 1:50 left, McCarthy tied the game with a layup with 41.3 seconds to go, and Forbes sealed the win with a 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds to play.
 
Forbes and McCarthy both hit 3-pointers inside of the first five minutes as the two teams stood tied 12-12 with 4:35 to go in the first quarter. A layup from Forbes pushed the Crimson ahead 18-17 with 2:02 to go in the frame, and Harvard maintained a 22-21 edge at the quarter's end.
 
After BU went ahead 28-22, a 3-pointer from Mullaney brought Harvard within 28-25 at the 5:34 mark of the second quarter. The Terriers moved ahead 34-25 before a pair of 3-pointers from Forbes cut the margin to 37-31 with 31 seconds left in the half. BU took a 40-31 advantage into the halftime break.

Harvard Highlights

  • Junior McKenzie Forbes scored a game and season-high 26 points on 10-of-17 field goals and 6-of-11 3-pointers. She scored in double figures for the third time this season and eclipsed 20 points for the second time this year. She led the team in scoring for the second time this season. She scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.
  • First-year Harmoni Turner netted a season-high 24 points on 9-of-19 field goals, 4-of-6 triples, and 2-of-2 free throws. She scored in double figures for the third time this year and registered 20 or more points for the first time. Turner netted 13 points in the third quarter alone and added four rebounds.
  • Sophomore Lola Mullaney tallied 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting and 4-of-4 free throws. She scored in double figures for the fifth time in six contests on the year.
  • Junior Maggie McCarthy corralled a team-best seven rebounds, leading the Crimson in rebounding for the second time this season.
  • Senior Tess Sussman distributed a team-best four assists alongside four rebounds and three steals. She led the team in assists for the second time on the year.

  • Harvard improved to 2-0 at home in 2021-22.
  • The Crimson bettered its mark to 21-15 all-time vs. BU. Harvard has won the last six matchups with the Terriers.
