ST. LOUIS – The Harvard Fencing program sent members of both the men's and women's squads to the North American Cup in St. Louis, Missouri this past weekend.
For the women, junior
Elizabeth Tartakovsky won the gold medal by finishing first out of 128 participants in the Division I Women's Saber tournament. Tartakovsky was dominant all day, allowing her opponents to reach double digits in just two of her direct elimination bouts. In the pair of aforementioned bouts, one took out Notre Dame's Atara Greenbaum to reach the semifinals, and the other was a 15-10 win over fellow junior world medalist and Princeton first-year Honor Johnson.
First-year
Lauren Scruggs finished 14
th out of 154 competitors in the Division I Women's Foil competition, losing 15-10 to Tokyo Olympic champion Lee Kiefer in the Round of 16.
On the men's side, Harvard had four first-year participants in the Division I Men's Foil tournament.
James Liao secured a bronze medal, finishing third out of 227 athletes with his performance. Liao upset the No. 4 seed, Kristjan Archer, 15-8, in the quarterfinals during his strong day of fencing.
Andrew Chung had strong effort at the NAC, finishing 11
th and knocking out the 7-seed Marcello Olivares of Notre Dame, 15-9, to advance to the Round of 16.
James Chen fought his way to a 21
st-place finish in the tournament, bowing out to Tokyo Olympic medalist Nick Itkin of Notre Dame.
Justin Liu rounded out the Crimson Foil showing by placing 27
th, in what was a successful weekend for the program at the national level.
In the Division I Men's Epee tournament, sophomore
Jonas Hansen finished 18
th out of 252 participants. Hansen defeated Matthew Trager in the Round of 64. Trager is a former world No. 1 junior fencer and was ranked in the top 50 in the world in the senior category.
First-year
Anthony Malysz finished 158
th in the Epee tournament.
The Crimson had alumni present at the NAC as well, Brian Kaneshige '15, now a USA fencing coach, helped guide Olympian Jackie Dubrovich to a fifth-place finish in the Division I Women's Foil tournament.
Adi Thein-Sandler '21, meanwhile, competed in the Division I Men's Epee tournament, finishing 10
th out of 252 competitors.
