Box Score CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Opening its 2021-22 campaign on the road, the Harvard women's basketball team (0-1, 0-0 Ivy League) suffered an 86-60 setback at Boston College (1-0, 0-0 ACC) tonight, Nov. 9, at the Conte Forum.
Sophomore
Lola Mullaney led the Crimson's offense with 16 points. First-year
Harmoni Turner and senior co-captain
Tess Sussman joined Mullaney in double-digit points with 13 and 11, respectively. Junior
Maggie McCarthy dished out a team-high three assists to aid the Crimson's offensive efforts. McCarthy and Sussman paced Harvard's defensive with five rebounds each, while Sussman added two steals to her tally as well.
Boston College jumped out to a 10-7 lead to start the first quarter. Mullaney and
Annie Stritzel both sank triples in the opening frame to keep the score tight. Stellar defense from the Crimson kept the Eagles at bay as Harvard claimed a 14-13 lead. BC regained its momentum after three-straight baskets, ending the quarter with a 19-15 advantage.
BC used two three-pointers to help build a 27-20 lead halfway through quarter two. Triples from Sussman and Mullaney cut the Crimson's deficit to four at 27-23, before BC used a 5-2 run to push ahead by 10 at 35-25. An offensive surge from the Eagles brought them into halftime with a 44-29 lead.
Back-and-forth action ensued to begin the third quarter, as Turner entered double-digit points with her first triple of the night. The Eagles used a 4-0 run to widen its margin to 24 at 58-34 halfway through the frame. Sussman sank back-to-back triples with four minutes remaining, but BC's sharp defense allowed the Eagles to maintain a 17-point lead at 67-47 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Eagles extended its lead to 20 out of the gates in quarter four. A pair of free throws from
Gabby Donaldson and a triple from McCarthy brought the Crimson within 17, but BC's offensive pressure proved to be too much as the Eagles sealed the 86-60 victory.
