Umitcan Gures all tallied NCAA B cut times on the second day of competition at the 2021 Minnesota Invitational on Thursday at the University of Minnesota's Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Competing against No. 1 Texas, No. 3 California, No. 4 Michigan, No. 17 Wisconsin, Arizona, and Minnesota on day two of four at the invitational, Johnson registered an NCAA B cut time in the 200-yard individual medley while Farris, Marcoux, and Gures all recorded NCAA B cut times in the 50-yard freestyle. Johnson, Farris, and Marcoux posted NCAA B cut times in both the prelims and finals on the day. In 3-meter diving, sophomore
Luke Foster paced Harvard with an NCAA standard score of 332.00.
Harvard Highlights
- In the 200-yard individual medley, senior Jake Johnson clocked NCAA B cut times in both the prelims and finals, taking sixth place in the event. After registering a 1:44.67 in the prelims, Johnson bettered the mark with a 1:44.58 in the finals, eclipsing the 1:46.77 B cut time by 2.19 seconds. Sophomore Will Grant followed in 15th place with a 1:46.97 in the B final, coming within 0.20 seconds of the NCAA B cut standard.
- Seniors Dean Farris and Raphael Marcoux and junior Umitcan Gures all notched NCAA B cut times in the 50-yard freestyle. In the A final, Farris placed seventh with a time of 19.60 and Marcoux came in eighth with a 19.94 while Gures finished in 17th in 19.79, racing in the C final. All three student-athletes eclipsed the NCAA B cut standard of 19.96 with Farris and Marcoux doing so in both the prelims (19.66 and 19.67 respectively) and finals.
- First-years Shane Washart and Arik Katz both swam in the C final of the 500-yard freestyle. Washart placed 22nd in 4:25.34 while Katz came in 23rd in 4:25.38. Earlier in the day, Washart clocked a 4:24.16 in the prelims for the Crimson's top time in the event on the year.
- Harvard's A relay in the 400-yard medley relay of senior Dean Farris, junior Jared Simpson, junior Umitcan Gures, and senior Raphael Marcoux placed seventh with a time of 3:08.36, marking the Crimson's top time in the event in 2021-22.
- In the championship finals of the 3-meter diving event, sophomore Luke Foster led the Crimson with a score of 332.00 for fourth place with first-year Adam Wesson (sixth, 314.90) and sophomore Nick Nocita (seventh, 305.50) following. Foster surpassed the NCAA standard score of 320.

Harvard continues competition at the Minnesota Invitational tomorrow – Friday, Dec. 3 – through Saturday, Dec. 4.
Friday competition will include 1-meter diving, the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 200 free relay with prelims at 11:00 a.m. ET (10:00 a.m. CT), diving at 2:00 p.m. ET (1:00 p.m. CT), and finals at 7:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. CT).
