CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Former Harvard men's ice hockey standout Adam Fox won the National Hockey League's Norris Trophy as the defenseman voted to have demonstrated the greatest all-around ability at the position by the Professional Hockey Writers Association.
Fox is the first ECAC Hockey or Ivy League player to win the award, and the first New York Ranger to earn the Norris Trophy since 1997, when Brian Leetch won it. He is just the fifth former NCAA Division I hockey player to win the Norris Trophy, joining Duncan Keith, Rob Blake, Brian Leetch, and Chris Chelios.
Fox completed his second NHL season, recording 47 points (five goals, 42 assists) in 55 games, with a plus-19 rating and an average of 24:42 ice time per game. He led all NHL defensemen in assists, and finished second among league blueliners in overall points and power play points (23).
A native of Jericho, N.Y., Fox enjoyed a historic Harvard career with 116 points (21 goals, 95 assists) in 97 games. He became the fourth defenseman in Harvard history to reach 100 career points, joining Fusco (135 points), Mark Benning '87 (111 points), and Randy Taylor '87 (102 points). He was also the first junior defenseman in college hockey to reach 100 points since Justin Schultz (Wisconsin) in 2011-12. A 2019 Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick finalist, Fox was also a three-time First Team All-American – the third player in program history to achieve that feat, joining Joe Cavanagh '71 and Mark Fusco '83. He also was the 2019 Walter Brown Award winner, ECAC Hockey Player of the Year, ECAC Hockey First Team and Ivy League Player of the Year selection.
Fox also excelled off the ice at Harvard as a Winter Academic All-Ivy honoree, in addition to helping organize the team's participation in Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk as part of Team Brave Livy to bring awareness to children with cancer.
