CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Incoming Harvard men's ice hockey first-year
Matthew Coronato was selected 13
th overall by the Calgary Flames in the first round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft tonight (July 23). Coronato, a native of Greenlawn, N.Y., is the highest NHL draft pick in program history, and the third first-round pick from Harvard, joining Chris Biotti '89 (17th overall, Calgary Flames, 1985) and Louis Leblanc '19 (18th overall, Montreal Canadiens, 2009).
Coronato had a record breaking season for the Chicago Steel of the USHL in 2020-21, leading the league in goal scoring (48) and plus/minus (+37) and finishing second with 85 points (48 goals, 37 assists) in 51 games. He set a USHL record with an average of .94 goals per game, and recorded a 28-game point streak spanning back to the 2020-21 season, also a USHL record. Coronato was named the 2021 USHL Forward of the Year, helping the Steel win the 2021 USHL Clark Cup Championship.
Harvard has now had a player selected in in 13 consecutive NHL Entry Drafts, including 15 selections in the last five drafts.
