TOKYO – Eight Harvard heavyweight rowers wrapped up competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Regatta this week. The Sea Forest Waterway hosted 14 men's and women's events along its 2000-meter course over eight days.

Recent graduates Alex Richards '18, Conor Harrity '18 and Liam Corrigan '19 finished fourth in Team USA's men's eight boat in the medal race on Friday morning. In its opening heat on Saturday, July 24, the crew placed second (5:30.57), 1.62 seconds behind Germany, sending it to the repechage. Just over three seconds separated the top four finishers advancing to the finals in Wednesday's repechage. The USA took third (5:23.43) behind New Zealand (5:22.04) and Great Britain (5:23.32) with Australia claiming the final spot. Netherlands rounded out the finals field, having advanced during heats on Saturday.

Just 2.11 seconds separated the top four finishers on Friday, New Zealand holding a lead for most of the race, clocking 5:24.64. Germany and Great Britain took silver and bronze respectively with times of 5:25.60 and 5:25.73. Team USA maintained its position the entire race, crossing the line in 5:26.75.

Representing Estonia in the men's quadruple sculls, Juri Mikk Udam '17 was the first Crimson alum to hit the water in Tokyo. In his crew's opening heat on Friday, July 23, Team Estonia took third (5:47.12) behind Poland (5:39.25) and Italy (5:39.28), setting it up to race in the repechage. On Sunday morning, Udam and his team clipped China in the final 500m to earn a spot in the A Final by 0.34 seconds. Estonia eventually took sixth overall in Wednesday's A Final with a time of 5:38.58, only 6.55 seconds off the gold medalists from Netherlands.

Clark Dean '23 and Andrew Reed '14 were members of Team USA's men's four boat that took fifth in the A Final. The crew scored an automatic advance to the A Final when it crossed the line second in its heat (5:57.27) on Saturday, July 24, exactly three seconds off the heat winners, Australia. In Wednesday's medal race, the USA clipped Netherlands by just over two seconds for fifth overall.

In the men's pair, Sam Hardy '18 and Josh Hicks '13 represented Australia and placed fourth in the B Final, 10th overall. The duo opened competition on Saturday, July 24, taking first in its heat (6:42.74) over Italy (6:48.74), New Zealand (6:56.53) and France (7:09.79). Returning on Wednesday for the semifinal race, Team Australia finished fourth (6:19.30) to secure its spot in the B Final. In Thursday morning's final, the pair clocked 6:30.20, less than eight seconds off Netherlands.
