CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Football's
Jon Sot has been named to the 2021 FCS Punter of the Year Award Preseason Watch List, the Augusta Sports Council announced Monday. The honor recognizes the top collegiate punter in the FCS.
The junior is one of 20 players nationally, and the only punter from the Ivy League, to appear on the list, which was compiled based on the 2020 FCS Punter of the Year Award Watch List, the '20 all-conference teams, the '20 All-America teams and the 2021 preseason all-league squads.
A native of Clark, New Jersey, Sot finds himself on the preseason watch list for a third consecutive campaign (2019, 2020, 2021) after establishing himself as one of the nation's top players at the position.
The economics concentrator is a two-time all-Ivy League first-team selection and garnered Phil Steele FCS All-America third-team accolades as a first-year in 2018. A season later, he led the Ivy League with a 42.3-yard punting average and set the Crimson's single-game school record (min. 3 att.) vs. Cornell, averaging 56.3 yards per boot. Prior to the pandemic wiping away the 2020 slate, Sot was considered the top punter in the Ivy, earning Phil Steele preseason all-conference first-team recognition.
The Augusta Sports Council, also home to the Ray Guy Award (awarded to the best collegiate punter in the FBS), created the FCS Punter of the Year Award in 2019 to honor the best collegiate punter playing in the FCS. Among the statistics used to identify the winner is net punting average, number of times punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, total yardage punted, average returned yardage and percentage of punts not returned with particular emphasis placed on net punting average. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
Sot and the Harvard football team are in fall camp, preparing for the 2021 season opener at Georgetown on Sept. 18 (12:30 p.m. ET). The Crimson's home opener is set for the next week when Brown visits Harvard Stadium on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. ET.
