Nick Abruzzese will serve as captains of the 2021-22 Harvard men's ice hockey team, Ted Donato, The Robert D. Ziff '88 Head Coach for Harvard Men's Ice Hockey, announced today (Aug. 5).
Abruzzese and Dornbach, elected as captains by their teammates, are the No. 1 and No. 2 returning scorers for Harvard from the 2019-20 season, as Abruzzese recorded a team-high 44 points (14 goals, 30 assists) and Dornbach added a career-high 36 points (12 goals, 24 assists).
A native of Edina, Minn., Dornbach has been a model student-athlete at Harvard as a three-time ECAC Hockey Academic Team selection and ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year nominee. Dornbach was named the ECAC Hockey and Ivy League Rookie of the Year after a banner 2018-19 season in which he finished third on the team in scoring with 29 points (seven goals, 22 assists), helping Harvard reach the NCAA Tournament.
Abruzzese was one of the nation's most electric first-year players in 2019-20, earning CCM/AHCA Hockey Second Team All-America honors. He led all NCAA first-years in scoring with 44 points and was named the ECAC Hockey and Ivy League Rookie of the Year, First Team All-ECAC Hockey and First Team All-Ivy. A native of Minisink, N.Y., Abruzzese recorded the best freshman season in the Ted Donato era at Harvard (2004-present), a mark previously established by Adam Fox (6-34-40) in 2016-17. He finished second in all of Division I college hockey with an average of 1.42 points per game.
