CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard sailing picked up its first win of the young season, finishing first among 17 teams at the Barnett Trophy, hosted by Bowdoin this weekend, Sept. 18-19. The result was just part of a competition-filled weekend for the Crimson, who also saw action at the NEISA Men's and Women's Singlehanded Championships, the Regis Trophy and the Hatch Brown Trophy.
Racing in Orr's Island, Maine, Harvard benefited from stellar contributions in both divisions to take home the title at the Barnett Trophy. Senior skipper
Jonas Nelle and junior crew
Carolyn Wang finished fifth in the A-division, aided by one first-place finish, while teammates
Lachlain McGranahan and
Cassia Lee earned five first-place finishes to rank second in the B-division.
In the headliner of the weekend, three Crimson made the short trip to Dorchester, Mass. to race in the NEISA Singlehanded Championships. First-year
Sophia Montgomery all but guaranteed a berth in the ICSA Singlehanded Championships in November by virtue of her second-place finish at the regional competition. Montgomery racked up five second-places and one victory across the regatta's 10 races to finish with 34 points, behind only Sophia Reineke of Boston College. While Reineke earned the automatic bid to nationals, Montgomery is well positioned for a bid of her own when a selection committee makes its picks later this season. Sophomore
Marleigh Belsley joined Montgomery in the women's competition. Belsley finished 13th with 121 points. On the men's side, junior
Alex Lee was the Crimson's lone competitor. Lee placed 21st with a total of 200 points. Connor Nelson of Brown was the top-finisher.
Back home at Harvard Sailing Club, the team played host to the women's only Regis Bowl. While competition was canceled on Saturday due to low winds, eight races were completed on Sunday, with Harvard placing fifth among 18 teams.
Sarah Burn and
Corinne Lee ranked third in the A-division, while the pairings of
Marbella Marlo and
Juliana Ruggieri, and
Cordelia Burn and
Margo Silliman, split time in the B-division, finishing 13th.
Rounding out the weekend on the Charles was the Hatch Brown Trophy, hosted by MIT. Saturday's low winds limited the regatta to five races, with Harvard claiming ninth place among a group of 18 teams in the three-division competition. Senior skipper
Emma Kaneti and junior crew
Tyler Masuyama led the charge for the Crimson, ranking seventh in the A-division with two first-place finishes.
Up Next:
Next weekend's schedule will see the Crimson compete at the women's only Mrs. Hurst Trophy, the Hood Trophy and the Hoyt Trophy, all Sept. 25-26. Harvard will also host two invitationals the same weekend.
