No. 18 Men's Ice Hockey Shut Out at No. 2/2 Quinnipiac, 3-0

Box Score HAMDEN, CT – In a tightly played contest, No. 2/2 Quinnipiac (15-1-3, 6-0-1 ECAC Hockey) shut out No. 18 Harvard men's ice hockey (8-5-1, 6-3-1 ECAC Hockey), 3-0, on Friday night (Jan. 14) at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.

Junior goaltender Mitchell Gibson made 17 saves for Harvard, which saw its three-game winning streak snapped.

Quinnipiac struck first on Ty Smilanic's partial breakaway at 6:42 of the opening period to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.

On Smilanic's goal, Harvard also took a penalty, but the Crimson killed that one, and another for too many men shortly thereafter to keep the Quinnipiac lead to one goal.

Early in the second period Quinnipiac broke Harvard's eight-game penalty killing streak (20-for-20), as Smilanic struck for his second of the night on a chance alone in the slot at 5:46 to make it 2-0.

Harvard drew a penalty late in the second period (19:39), when Wyatt Bongiovanni tripped up Matthew Coronato in the neutral zone.

But Harvard could not convert on the ensuing power play. Bongiovanni sealed the win for Quinnipiac, scoring on a breakaway at 17:15.

Harvard Highlights
  • First-year forward Matthew Coronato led Harvard with three shots on goal.
  • Junior defenseman Ryan Siedem had four blocked shots for the Crimson.
Game Notes
  • Harvard finished the night 3-for-4 on the penalty kill, and went 0-for-2 on the power play. Harvard's eight-game run of perfection on the penalty kill (20-for-20) was snapped, but Harvard has killed 23 of its last 24 penalties.
  • Harvard fell to 1-2-0 against ranked teams this year.
