No. 23 Men’s Swimming and Diving Defeats Brown, 215-84

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 23 Harvard University men's swimming and diving won 15 of the day's 16 events to defeat Brown University, 215-84, on Tuesday afternoon at Blodgett Pool in its first home meet since Nov. 19, 2021.
 
Alongside its 15 event wins, the Crimson (5-1, 4-0 Ivy) tallied 11 second-place finishes and eight third-place showings on its way to the victory over the visiting Bears (3-3, 3-3 Ivy) in its second of three home meets this season.
 
Harvard went 1-2-3 in five events on the day – the 1000 free, 100 back, 50 free, 100 free, and 100 fly. The Crimson's 15 event wins included the 200 medley relay, 1000 free, 200 free, 100 back, 200 fly, 50 free, 3-meter diving, 100 free, 200 back, 200 breast, 500 free, 100 fly, 1-meter diving, 200 IM, and 400 free relay.
 
First-year Adam Wesson (3-meter, 1-meter) and sophomores Noah Brune (200 butterfly, 500 freestyle), Will Grant (100 backstroke, 200 individual medley), and Marcus Holmquist (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle) all earned two individual event wins on the day.

Harvard Highlights

  • Harvard opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay behind a time of 1:27.73 from the quartet of senior Dean Farris, junior Jared Simpson, junior Umitcan Gures, and senior Raphael Marcoux.
  • The Crimson took the top three spots in the 1000-yard freestyle behind efforts from first-year Shane Washart (9:18.41), first-year Arik Katz (9:25.89), and junior Simon Lamar (9:27.78).
  • Sophomore Marcus Holmquist won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.02 while sophomore Cole Kuster came in second in 1:39.63.
  • Sophomore Will Grant captured the 100-yard backstroke in 48.82 as the Crimson took the top four spots in the event. First-year Anthony Rincon (49.33) and junior Umitcan Gures (50.60) came in second and third respectively.
  • Sophomore Noah Brune claimed the 200-yard butterfly in 1:49.48 for his top time in the event this season.
  • Senior Raphael Marcoux won the 50-yard freestyle in 19.98, just missing the NCAA B cut mark of 19.96. Harvard took the top four spots in the event with senior Dean Farris (20.10) and junior Ryan Linnihan (20.71) taking second and third respectively.
  • First-year Adam Wesson won both 3-meter diving (389.93) and 1-meter diving (355.58). Senior Hal Watts came in second in the 1-meter event (347.85) and third in the 3-meter event (342.68). All four marks eclipsed the NCAA standards.
  • Sophomore Marcus Holmquist claimed his second win of the day with a 45.42 in the 100-yard freestyle while junior Ryan Linnihann (46.08) took second and first-year Aayush Deshpande (46.31) finished in third.
  • First-year Anthony Rincon captured first place in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:48.33, and senior Michael Zarian came in second in 1:48.85.
  • In the 200-yard breaststroke, first-year Quinn Harron won in 2:01.76, and first-year Dylan Rhee placed second in 2:01.92.
  • Sophomore Noah Brune won his second event of the day behind a 4:29.66 in the 500-yard freestyle with first-year Harris Durham coming in second in 4:33.29.
  • Senior Dean Farris won the 100-yard butterfly in 47.68, approaching the NCAA B cut mark of 47.43. Harvard took the top four spots in the event with junior Umitcan Gures (47.78) and senior Raphael Marcoux (49.47) coming in second and third.
  • Sophomore Will Grant tallied his second victory of the day behind a 1:50.82 in the 200-yard individual medley. Senior Michael Zarian came in third in 1:52.21.
  • Harvard closed the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 2:57.98 from the group of senior Raphael Marcoux, sophomore Marcus Holmquist, junior Umitcan Gures, and senior Dean Farris.
  • Sophomore David Abrahams paced Harvard in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing third in 57.41.
  • Kevin Tyrrell, The Ulen-Brooks Endowed Coach for Harvard Men's Swimming & Diving, earned his 50th Ivy League win as the head coach of the Crimson. He improved to 50-1 in Ivy League dual competition during his time at Harvard.
  • Harvard improved to 87-2 all-time vs. Brown.
