No. 22 Men’s Swimming and Diving Hosts Penn in Home Finale Saturday

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 22 Harvard University men's swimming and diving hosts the University of Pennsylvania for an Ivy League dual meet in its home finale on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 11:00 a.m. (ESPN+) at Blodgett Pool.

In response to the rise of COVID-19 in the broader Harvard community, the Harvard Athletics Department is limiting spectators at its home athletics events through Jan. 23, 2022.

What to Know: Top Marks

Senior Dean Farris owns the Ivy League's top time in the 100 free with an NCAA B cut time of 42.34, the 50 backstroke in 21.35, and the 100 backstroke (45.96, NCAA B cut). He also stands second in the 50 free (19.60, B cut) and 200 free (1:35.57, NCAA B cut).
Senior Raphael Marcoux holds the Ivy League's top time in the 50 free with an NCAA B cut time of 19.41.
Sophomore Will Grant leads the Ancient Eight in the 200 backstroke with an NCAA B cut time of 1:43.07. He ranks second in the league in the 100 back with an NCAA B cut time of 47.02 and in the 50 back (21.98).
Junior Umitcan Gures holds the league's top time in the 50 butterfly (21.16) and 100 butterfly (45.15, NCAA B cut).
Sophomore Cole Kuster leads the Ivy League in the 1000 free (9:05.09). He also stands third in the league in the 500 free with an NCAA B cut time of 4:22.17.
First-year Shane Washart paces the conference in the 1650 free with an NCAA B cut time of 15:07.49. First-year Arik Katz ranks third in the event (15:10.62).
Senior Jake Johnson stands second in the league in the 200 butterfly with an NCAA B cut mark of 1:42.99. Johnson sits third in the 200 IM with an NCAA B cut time of 1:44.58.
Sophomore Marcus Holmquist ranks third in the conference in the 200 free (1:36.71).
Junior Simon Lamar ranks third in the Ancient Eight in the 1000 free (9:22.01).
Junior Jared Simpson ranks fourth in the conference in the 100 breaststroke with an NCAA B cut mark of 53.52.
On the boards, sophomore Luke Foster holds the team's top score in 1-meter diving (364.90) while first-year Adam Wesson carries the team's top mark in 3-meter diving (389.93).

What to Know: Rankings and Meet Performances

The Crimson ranks at No. 22 from the CSCAA poll from January, sitting as the top school from a non-power five conference. Harvard stood at No. 22 in the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America preseason rankings and at No. 23 in the December poll. Harvard featured as the only non-power five program in the CSCAA preseason poll.
The Crimson checked in at No. 15 in SwimSwam's first edition of Power Rankings for the 2021-22 season. In the Nov. 17 edition, Harvard featured at No. 17, and in the Dec. 14 edition, the Crimson moved to No. 16.
The No. 23 Crimson won 15 of the day's 16 events to defeat Brown, 215-84, on Jan. 18 at Blodgett Pool in the team's first home meet since Nov. 19, 2021. Alongside its 15 event wins, the Crimson tallied 11 second-place finishes and eight third-place showings in its second of three home meets this season.
No. 23 Harvard won five events, including both relays, as the Crimson topped the University of the Pacific, 186-30, and fell to No. 10 Stanford University, 162-127, on Jan. 14 at the Avery Aquatic Center.
Harvard won both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay, senior Dean Farris took first place in both the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle, and senior Jake Johnson claimed first in the 200 butterfly. Farris notched an NCAA B cut time in the 200 free, Johnson hit an NCAA B cut in the 200 fly, and senior Raphael Marcoux registered an NCAA B cut in the 50 freestyle. In diving competition, first-year Adam Wesson won the 3-meter event (375.53) and took second in the 1-meter event (345.08).
Competing at the Minnesota Invitational against four nationally ranked teams, the Crimson tallied NCAA qualifying times in both the 400 free relay and 200 free relay, setting a school record in the 400 free relay (2:49.85).
Over the course of the Minnesota Invitational, senior Dean Farris contributed to two NCAA A cut relays (400 free, 200 free), an NCAA B cut relay (200 medley), and three individual NCAA B cuts (100 free, 100 fly, 50 free). Junior Umitcan Gures was a part of the 200 free relay A cut and 200 medley relay B cut alongside three NCAA B cut individual times (200 fly, 100 fly, 50 free) and an event win in the 100 fly. Senior Raphael Marcoux swam in the NCAA A cut relays (400 free, 200 free) as well as the NCAA B cut 200 medley relay and an individual NCAA B cut in the 50 free.
Senior Mahlon Reihman competed with the NCAA A cut relays (400 free, 200 free) and added an individual NCAA B cut in the 100 free. Senior Jake Johnson (200 fly, 100 fly, 200 IM), sophomore Will Grant (200 back, 100 back), and junior Jared Simpson (100 breast, 200 medley relay) all took part in multiple NCAA B cut swims.
Harvard defeated Columbia University, 207-93, on Nov. 19 at Blodgett Pool in its home opener as the Crimson competed at home for the first time since Feb. 29, 2020 – a span of 629 days. The Crimson won 13 of the 14 swimming events and added 12 second-place showings and eight third-place finishes to top the visiting Lions, taking its third straight Ivy League dual win to begin the season.
Harvard returned to competition on Saturday, Nov. 13 for the first time since February 29, 2020 – a span of 622 days. Competing for the first time in over 600 days, No. 22 Harvard beat Cornell University, 233-65, and Dartmouth College, 219-77, in an Ivy League tri meet on Nov. 13 at Ithaca College's Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium in its season opener. The Crimson bested the host Big Red as well as the Big Green behind 14 event wins, 12 second-place finishes, and 13 third-place efforts.
Over its first three dual meets, Harvard totaled 40 event wins, 36 second-place showings, and 29 third-place finishes.

At the Helm

Kevin Tyrrell enters his ninth year as The Ulen-Brooks Endowed Coach for Harvard Men's Swimming & Diving in the 2021-22 season. Under Tyrrell's direction, the Crimson has captured five Ivy League championships, including four consecutive titles from 2016-17 to 2019-20. Tyrell has earned Ivy League Coach of the Year honors three times (2016-17, 2018-19, 2019-20).
