Posting Another Set Of Superb Results, Track & Field Take Down Four Harvard School Records

BOSTON, Mass. - Spurred by excellent performances in the running events, the Harvard men's and women's Track & Field teams had another record setting day today, Jan. 22nd at Boston University's Battle In Beantown. The Crimson came out on top in 9 events, winning the Women's 60m Hurdles, 60m, 600m, 300m, 200m and 4x400m, and the Men's 300m, 4x400m and Shot Put.

Winning six of the nine events for the Crimson, the women's team had an excellent day over at their cross-town rival. Starting the day strong with the 60m Hurdles, senior Jada Jones secured the Harvard win with a blazing 8.51 second finish. In the 60m, for the third meet in a row, junior Tina Martin trounced any and all competition, capturing the victory with a time of 7.43 seconds, tying her personal best in the event. Refusing to lose, Martin then won the 200m with a stupendous 23.86 second finish, setting a new personal best in the process. Staying on the track, in the 300m, first-year Izzy Goudros notched another first place finish for the Crimson with her 38.35 second time, outrunning second place by over a second and setting the second fastest time in Harvard school history in the event. Capturing just her second win as a member of the Crimson, first-year Victoria Bossong earned a victory in the 600m with her 1:30.62 finishing time. Finally, in the 4x400m, the Harvard team won a hotly contested race with a time of 3:46.14, their victory due in part to excellent 54 second legs from Martin and Goudros to close out the contest.

Securing their own solid results on the day, the men's team had another successful meet. The Harvard record holder in the event, first-year Oliver Murcko showed those in attendance just why he dominates the 300m, securing victory by over half a second with his 33.82 second time. Lending his talents to the Harvard 4x400m team as well, Murcko helped the Crimson dominate the race, winning by more than four seconds with a time of 3:10.17. Moving over to throws, sophomore Alexander Kolesnikoff obliterated the field in the shot put. Seizing the win on just his third throw, his monstrous mark of 19.05m (62'6") gave him a nearly two-meter margin of victory.

Record Setting Performances
  • Victoria Bossong's 1:30.62 finish in the women's 600m is the fastest time in Harvard school history, beating out Jade Miller's '17 time of 1:31.48 set back in February of 2016.
  • Alexander Kolesnikoff's mark of 19.05m (62'6") in the Men's Shot Put was enough to overtake the previous Harvard school record of 18.74m, set by Richard W. Benka '69 back in January of 1969.
  • In the Men's 4x400m relay, the Crimson's finish of 3:10.17 was just enough to best the previous Harvard school record of 3:10.84, set back in March of 2017.
  • Greg Lapit's 400m time of 47.28 was fast enough not only for second place, but also for a new Harvard school record in the event, beating out the previous mark of 47.29 by just 0.01 second. The previous record holder, Jovahn Williams '21, put up that time in January of 2020.

Harvard Highlights
  • Alexander Kolesnikoff set a new Harvard school record not once but twice, reaching a mark of 19.05m on both his third and fifth tosses.
  • The only person with a faster time than Izzy Goudros in the 300m in Harvard history is Olympic Medal winner Gabby Thomas '19.
  • This is the second meet in a row that Kolesnikoff has shattered his personal best, with his 19.05m mark today soundly overtaking last weekend's PR of 18.43m put up at the Lions Indoor Invitational.
  • This is the third meet in a row that Tina Martin has put up a personal best, this time in the 200m, improving on her 23.90 second mark put up last weekend at the Lions Indoor Invitational.
  • For the third consecutive meet at least one new Harvard record has been established by the Crimson.
  • Beaten by Koleskinkoff, Benka's '69 1969 record in the men's shot put was a record that stood for over half a century.
