Men's Ice Hockey Set For Road Series at Colgate, No. 8/9 Cornell

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard men's ice hockey (9-7-1, 7-5-1 ECAC Hockey)  heads to Central New York to take on Colgate (8-13-2, 3-6-2 ECAC Hockey) and No. 8/9 Cornell (13-4-1, 8-2-1 ECAC Hockey) this weekend (Jan. 28-29) Earlier this season, Harvard swept the Big Red (W, 3-2) and Raiders (W, 5-1) on Nov. 5-6, marking the first time the Crimson swept Cornell/Colgate at home since the 2008-09 season.

What to Know
• Harvard's early season success can be attributed to a potent offensive attack (17th in NCAA, 3.24 goals per game) and a solid defensive corps (15th in NCAA, 2.35 goals allowed per game). Harvard has allowed more than 3 goals in a game just twice all season, while scoring 4 or more goals in a game on eight occasions this season (8-0-0).

• Harvard has scored first in 11 of 17 contests this year (7-3-1 in those games) and is outscoring teams 25-8 in the first period of games this season.
 
• Junior forward Nick Abruzzese and sophomore forward Sean Farrell will represent the United States in men's ice hockey at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, USA Hockey announced on Thursday. Abruzzese, a native of Slate Hill, NY, leads Harvard with 21 points (five goals, 16 assists) and is fourth in the NCAA with an average of 1.40 points per game. Farrell, a native of Hopkinton, Mass., has 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists) and four power play goals. He is 12th in the NCAA with 1.27 points per game. Harvard has now had 30 men's hockey alumni selected as a coach, player, or member of team personnel of their respective national teams, including current head coach Ted Donato '91, who represented the U.S. at the 1992 Winter Olympics. Harvard has 24 U.S. Olympic team player selections all-time. Men's hockey competition at the Olympics begins on Feb. 9 and concludes on Feb. 20.

• Last Friday (Jan. 21) against St. Lawrence, sophomore Alex Laferriere recorded his third mulitple-goal game of the season, scoring twice in a 4-1 win over the Saints. Laferriere leads the team with 10 goals on the year (14th NCAA, .59 goals per game). On Nov. 6 against Colgate,, recorded Harvard's first four-goal game since Ryan Donato '19 scored four on Feb. 10, 2017 against Union.

• Colgate is one of the top teams in the nation in the faceoff circle - winning 53.9% of draws (No. 8, NCAA). The Raiders are in the midst of an eight-game winless streak (0-6-2). Junior forward Colton Young (11-9-20) leads the team in scoring. Three goaltenders have split starts for the Raiders, with Andrew Farrier (1-2-1, 2.96 GAA, .908 GAA) making the last start on Jan. 22 in a 2-2 tie against Princeton, stopping 23 shots.

• Cornell has won four of its last five contests, a stretch that has included a road sweep at No. 5 North Dakota, and a home 2-1 OT win over No. 1 Quinnipiac in its last game on Jan. 22. Senior forward Max Andreev (8-11-19) leads the team in scoring, while junior forward Matt Stienburg (7-11-18) has also been solid. Cornell averages 3.67 goals per game (No. 7, NCAA), while allowing 2.33 goals per contest (No. 14, NCAA), with a solid penalty kill (87.7%, No. 8, NCAA).

At the Helm
Following success as a player, Harvard head coach Ted Donato has compiled a long list of accomplishments as head coach of the Crimson. The former Harvard captain has guided Harvard to four ECAC Hockey titles and three Ivy League championships, claimed six NCAA Tournament berths, coached 13 All-Americans and 17 National Hockey Leaguers. Donato, who won an NCAA Championship as a Harvard player in 1989 and enjoyed a 13-year NHL career, has represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, multiple World Championships, and was the leading scorer of the 1992 Olympic Team in Albertville, France.
