Harvard Game Notes
What to Know
• On Saturday (Jan. 29), senior defenseman
Marshall Rifai and first-year forward
Matthew Coronato scored second period goals and junior goaltender
Mitchell Gibson made the deciding save in the shootout to help Harvard men's ice hockey earn a shootout win at No. 8/9 Cornell after a 2-2 regulation tie. Harvard earned five of six points in the regular season series against Cornell, taking the majority of points in a season series against Cornell for the first time since 2016-17.
• In the last meeting between Harvard and BC, on Feb. 10, 2020,
Casey Dornbach and R.J. Murphy scored, but Harvard fell, 7-2, to Boston College in the Beanpot consolation game at TD Garden.BC outshot Harvard, 37-28, for the game, but the Crimson held the Eagles scoreless on five power play chances, while going 1-for-2 on the man advantage themselves.
• Just like Harvard will be missing the services of
Nick Abruzzese and
Sean Farrell, as both departed on Sunday for the 2022 Olympic Games with the U.S. Men's Hockey team, BC will be without three key players due to the Olympics, as leading scorer Marc McLaughlin (18-6-24) and top defenseman Drew Helleson (2-16-18) will also be with the U.S. team, while Jack McBain (13-11-24) was selected for Team Canada. Yale transfer Jack St. Ivany (4-15-19) is a threat from the blue line, while Patrick Giles (9-5-14) is also a leading goal scorer. BC is 21st in the nation in scoring offense (3.12 goals per game), and is allowing 3.20 goals per contest (41st, NCAA). Grad student goaltender Eric Dop (7-8-4, 3.00 GAA, .890 Save%) has made the last three starts in net.
• Sophomore
Alex Laferriere recorded his team leading 11th goal of the season at Colgate, and on Jan. 21, had his third mulitple-goal game of the season, scoring a pair in a win over St. Lawrence. Laferriere is scoring at an impressive clip (10th NCAA, .58 goals per game). On Nov. 6 against Colgate, he recorded Harvard's first four-goal game since Ryan Donato '19 scored four on Feb. 10, 2017.
• Harvard's early season success can be attributed to a potent offensive attack (15th in NCAA, 3.26 goals per game) and a solid defensive corps (16th in NCAA, 2.36 goals allowed per game). Harvard has allowed more than 3 goals in a game just twice all season, while scoring 4 or more goals in a game on nine occasions this season (9-0-0).
At the Helm
Following success as a player, Harvard head coach Ted Donato has compiled a long list of accomplishments as head coach of the Crimson. The former Harvard captain has guided Harvard to four ECAC Hockey titles and three Ivy League championships, claimed six NCAA Tournament berths, coached 13 All-Americans and 17 National Hockey Leaguers. Donato, who won an NCAA Championship as a Harvard player in 1989 and enjoyed a 13-year NHL career, has represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, multiple World Championships, and was the leading scorer of the 1992 Olympic Team in Albertville, France.
