Women’s Basketball Bests Brown, 89-58

Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Picking up its first conference win on the road, the Harvard women's basketball team (7-7, 1-1 Ivy League) defeated Brown (5-9, 0-2 Ivy League), 89-58, tonight at the Pizzitola Sports Center.
 
Three Crimson players led the offense with 17 points, including junior McKenzie Forbes, sophomore Lola Mullaney and first-year Harmoni Turner. Junior Maggie McCarthy joined the trio in double figures with 11 points. Defensively, McCarthy and Mullaney posted a team-high seven rebounds apiece, while first-years Elle Stauffer and Sabre Zimmer added six and five boards, respectively.
 
The Crimson came out the gates scoring eight-straight points in the opening minute of play. Turner extended Harvard's lead to 13-4 with her first triple of the game, while Stuhlreyer helped the Crimson gain a 15-point advantage at the midway point with two buckets. Two triples from McCarthy and one from Sara Park propelled Harvard to a 34-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
 
Five points from Forbes pushed Harvard's advantage to 40-24 to begin quarter two. The teams traded few baskets throughout the remainder of the frame as strong defense ensued. Mullaney netted five points to end the quarter giving the Crimson a 49-29 lead heading into halftime.
 
After two quick baskets from Brown to kick off the second half, McCarthy hit her third triple of the game to maintain an 18-point advantage for Harvard. The Crimson used an 8-2 run to widen its margin to 24 points at 60-36, highlighted by four points from Park. Baskets from across the line up, including Annie Stritzel, Turner, Mullaney and Forbes, pushed Harvard ahead 70-49 to conclude the quarter.
 
Mullaney sank two triples to begin the fourth quarter, as a 12-3 run helped the Crimson build an 82-53 lead in the first half of the frame. Savanna Coffel and Zimmer netted their first points in a Crimson uniform, while Gabby Donaldson added a basket to put Harvard up by 34. Strong defense kept the Bears at bay, as Harvard sealed an 89-58 victory.

- Harvard shot 50.7 percent from the field (35-for-69) and made 11 three-pointers.
- The Crimson held Brown to a 19.2 percent mark from behind the arc.
- Harvard won the rebounding battle against the Bears, 46-28.
- The Crimson dished out 20 assists and nine steals on the night.
- McCarthy went 4-for-5 from the field and 3-for-4 from downtown for her second highest marks of the season.
- Turner picked up a team-best seven assists and three steals.
