Lola Mullaney, the Harvard women's basketball team (7-9 overall, 1-2 Ivy League) fell to Yale (8-6, 1-1 Ivy League) this afternoon at the Lee Amphitheater.
Adding to Mullaney's 27 points, junior
Maggie McCarthy and first-year
Harmoni Turner joined in double figures with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Mullaney was unstoppable from behind the arc, posting a career-high seven triples, while tying her career-high in field goals made with nine. Turner led the defense with seven rebounds, with Mullaney and junior
Annie Stritzel contributing five apiece.
The Crimson used a 6-1 run to begin the game, including four points from Turner. Two triples from Mullaney and one from McCarthy pushed Harvard ahead 15-10. An 8-3 run to end the opening frame, highlighted by four points from McCarthy, gave the Crimson a 23-16 advantage to begin the game.
The teams traded baskets to open the second quarter, before Harvard netted three-straight buckets as Stritzel and Mullaney downed triples. Yale cuts its deficit to four at 33-29 after hitting three consecutive triples of its own. The Bulldogs went on take its first lead at 37-33 after a 17-0 run. Mullaney hit her fourth triple of the game in the closing seconds of the quarter to bring the Crimson within one, while Yale took a 40-36 lead into halftime.
Back-and-forth action ensued at the start of the third quarter, as Turner and Mullaney kept the Crimson within two points at 43-41. After Yale scored seven-straight points to extend its lead to 50-41, Harvard got an offensive spark using a 9-0 run to knot the score at 50-50. The Crimson and Bulldogs traded free throws as the third quarter winded down, while Yale dropped in two more buckets to take a narrow 57-52 advantage into the final frame.
Mullaney hit two baskets to begin quarter four, but Yale knocked down two triples to maintain an eight-point lead. Strong defense from both teams produced little scoring through the midpoint of the frame, before the Crimson and Bulldogs traded free throws. Mullaney sank two triples in the final 30 seconds of the game, however Yale sealed an 80-73 victory down the line off free throws.
