Women’s Basketball Defeats UMass Lowell in Return to Cambridge

Cambridge, Mass. - Returning to Cambridge after competing in the Cancun Challenge Tournament, the Harvard women's basketball team (4-4) defeated UMass Lowell (0-6) with a score of 86-66.

Three Crimson players scored points in the double digits back on familiar ground in Lavietes Pavilion. Harmoni Turner lead the team with 27 points, highlighted by a buzzer beater three-point field goal to end the first quarter. Lola Mullaney and McKenzie Forbes also reported 10+ points with 19 and 10, respectively.

Turner said of the game the Crimson team "really gave it their all the first quarter [and then] realized who [they] are as a team to come together and make that win happen in the last two quarters." 

Turner started the game with a three point goal followed by a field goal from Forbes. The Crimson dominated the first five minutes of play, bringing the score to 16-0 halfway through quarter one. Turner ended the quarter with a shot from just over the half-court line to put the Crimson up 24-7.

Harvard started the second quarter shooting 100% for the first three minutes of action and finished with 100% in free throws. Going into the half, Turner lead the Crimson with 17 points, Elena Rodriguez lead in rebounds with six and Turner lead in assists with three. The Riverhawks had a stronger second quarter than their first but the Crimson went into the locker room with an 11 point lead, 44-33.

Harvard came back on the court determined to hold their lead and continue their offensive domination at home. In the third quarter the Crimson shot 66.7% in three point field goals over the Riverhawks' 33.3%. Harvard also hit ten of 11 free throws over UMass Lowell's four of six. Turner ended the quarter with a layup to bring the score to 72-49.

The Riverhawks attempted to hold back the Crimson offense for the first few minutes of quarter four, holding Harvard to one field goal from Turner. The Crimson regained their footing and closed out the game the same way they performed the first three quarters, out rebounding UMass Lowell ten to two in the final ten. Harvard ultimately added another victory to their 2022-23 resume with an 86-66 final score.

Harvard Highlights

- Turner lead the team in points with 27. This is fifth game of the 2022-23 season that she has done so and the fourth where she has scored over 20 points.

- Forbes and Mullaney each scored points in the double digits as well, with 10 and 19, respectively.
- Rodriguez lead the team in rebounds, posting six with two offensive rebounds and four defensive rebounds.
- Turner also lead the team in assists, posting five against UMass Lowell. Forbes, Mullaney, Rodriguez, Katie Krupa, Kennedy Heath and Lindsay Lawson all posted one each.
- The Crimson scored 24 points in the first quarter against UMass Lowell. This is the most the team has put up in the first ten minutes of play so far this season.
-Harvard made six three point field goals throughout the night, lead by Lola Mullaney's three of five, individually shooting 60%.
-Harvard built up a lead with a 91.7% free throw percentage shooting 24 free throws over the Riverhawks' 64.7% from 17 free throws.
-Harvard made 15 steals in tonight's game, the most so far this season.
-Tonight's game was the first matchup between the two teams, with tonight's victory bringing Harvard up 1-0 to start the series with an in-state rival.
