Harvard Game Notes

The Last Game
On Friday night (Feb. 11) against Yale, sophomore forward Alex Laferriere had a goal and an assist, and junior goaltender Mitchell Gibson made all 15 saves to help Harvard earn a 2-0 shutout win over the Bulldogs, its first shutout of the season. Junior forward John Farinacci added a goal, and Laferriere earned the Tim Taylor Award as Most Valuable Player of the Harvard-Yale game played at Harvard.

The Last Harvard-BC Meeting
On Feb 1, trailing by three midway through the game, Harvard scored six unanswered goals to rally for a 6-3 win over Boston College at Kelley Rink. The win was Harvard's first over BC since Feb. 12, 2018, and first at Kelley Rink since Nov. 11, 2014. Harvard scored three power play goals on the night to key the comeback.Junior defenseman Henry Thrun and junior forward Baker Shore each had a goal and an assist, junior defenseman Ryan Siedem added three assists, and senior captain Casey Dornbach had two assists to lead the Crimson attack.

Scouting Boston College
BC is without three key players due to the Olympics, as leading scorer Marc McLaughlin (18-6-24) and top defenseman Drew Helleson (2-16-18) will also be with the U.S. team, while Jack McBain (13-11-24) was selected for Team Canada. Yale transfer Jack St. Ivany (4-16-20) is a threat from the blue line, while Patrick Giles (11-5-16) is also a leading goal scorer.

Harvard's Olympians
Junior forward Nick Abruzzese and sophomore forward Sean Farrell are representing the United States in men's ice hockey at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.

Both players have made an immediate impact with the U.S. team, as Farrell had five points (3G-2A), including a hat trick in an 8-0 win over China on Feb. 10, which was the most points in a game by a U.S. Olympian since Bill Cleary '56 had six points in a game in the 1960 Olympics. Abruzzese had two assists in a 3-2 win over Germany on Feb. 13.

Abruzzese, a native of Slate Hill, NY, leads Harvard with 21 points (five goals, 16 assists) and is 10th in the NCAA with an average of 1.24 points per game. Farrell, a native of Hopkinton, Mass., has 19 points (eight goals, 11 assists) and four power play goals. Harvard has now had 30 men's hockey alumni selected as a coach, player, or member of team personnel of their respective national teams, including current head coach Ted Donato '91, who represented the U.S. at the 1992 Winter Olympics. Harvard has 24 U.S. Olympic team player selections all-time.

What Else To Know
• After missing several games to start the 2022, John Farinacci (8-5-13) has been a top offensive threat for the Crimson of late. Fariancci has six goals and eight points in his last nine games, and leads the team with four game-winners.

• Sophomore Alex Laferriere recorded his team leading 12th goal of the season against Yale last Friday, and was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Month for January. On Nov. 6 against Colgate, he recorded Harvard's first four-goal game since Ryan Donato '19 scored four on Feb. 10, 2017.

• Harvard's recent success has been in large part because of Laferriere's new line (Fr. LW Alex Gaffney-Jr. C John Farinacci-So. RW Alex Laferriere) – formed on Jan. 21. Those three played on the same line for the New Jersey Colonials (AAA 13U) together growing up in the same area of New Jersey. They have accounted for 11 goals in nine games since being paired together.

• Harvard's success can be attributed to a potent offensive attack (3.30 goals per game, 14th, NCAA) and a solid defensive corps (2.30 goals allowed per game, 11th NCAA). Harvard has allowed more than 3 goals in a game just three times all season, while scoring 4 or more goals in a game on 10 occasions this season (10-0-0).

At the Helm
Following success as a player, Harvard head coach Ted Donato has compiled a long list of accomplishments as head coach of the Crimson. The former Harvard captain has guided Harvard to four ECAC Hockey titles and three Ivy League championships, claimed six NCAA Tournament berths, coached 13 All-Americans and 17 National Hockey Leaguers. Donato, who won an NCAA Championship as a Harvard player in 1989 and enjoyed a 13-year NHL career, has represented Team USA at the World Junior Championships, multiple World Championships, and was the leading scorer of the 1992 Olympic Team in Albertville, France.

Up Next
Harvard will play its final regular season home games when it hosts Princeton and Quinnipiac this weekend (Feb. 18-19) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
