No. 18 Men’s Swimming and Diving Takes Two Event Wins, Remains in First on Ivies Day Two

PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Mahlon Reihman won the 50-yard freestyle, and the Crimson captured the 200-yard freestyle relay with a meet record time as No. 18 Harvard University men's swimming and diving maintained its position in first place in the team standings after day two at the 2022 Ivy League Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
 
Harvard holds first place in the team standings with 570 points – three points ahead of second-place Princeton (567) in addition to third-place Brown (325) and the five other Ivy schools.
 
Reihman took the 50 free with an NCAA B cut time of 19.42 while senior Dean Farris came in second in an NCAA B cut time of 19.43. Harvard took four of the top five spots in the event alongside six NCAA B cut swims. The quartet of senior Raphael Marcoux, junior Umitcan Gures, Reihman, and sophomore Marcus Holmquist closed the night with a victory in the 200 free relay with an NCAA B cut and meet record time of 1:17.14. Senior Jake Johnson set a new school record in the 200 IM (1:43.82) for his second program record of the meet.
 
Through two days at the championship, the Crimson has tallied four event wins – including all three relays – two NCAA A cut times, three school records, two meet records, two pool records, two second-place finishes, and 15 NCAA B cut swims.

Harvard Highlights: Finals

  • Senior Mahlon Reihman won the 50-yard freestyle in an NCAA B cut time of 19.42, and Dean Farris took second in an NCAA B cut time of 19.43 – 0.01 seconds behind first. The Crimson took four of the top five spots in the event with six student-athletes posting NCAA B cut times.
  • Harvard won the 50 free for the 13th time in program history and for the second straight season.
  • Harvard closed the night with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the quartet of senior Raphael Marcoux, junior Umitcan Gures, senior Mahlon Reihman, and sophomore Marcus Holmquist claimed the race with an NCAA B cut time of 1:17.14, setting a new meet record.
  • The Crimson won the 200 free relay for the 13th time in school history and for the third time in the last four seasons (2018, 2019). Marcoux won the event for the third time (2018, 2019), and Gures claimed the event for the second time (2019).
  • Also competing in the 50 free, senior Raphael Marcoux came in fourth in an NCAA B cut time of 19.54 while junior Umitcan Gures finished fifth in an NCAA B cut time of 19.61.
  • The Crimson took three of the top six spots in the 200-yard individual medley with two times under the previous school record and a trio of NCAA B cut times. Senior Jake Johnson came in second in a school record time of 1:43.82, junior Jared Simpson finished third in 1:44.01, and sophomore Will Grant took sixth in 1:46.27. All three student-athletes registered NCAA B cut times in both the prelims and finals.
  • In the 500-yard freestyle, first-year Shane Washart placed third with an NCAA B cut time of 4:19.84, and sophomore Cole Kuster came in fourth with an NCAA B cut time of 4:20.64. Washart and Kuster clocked NCAA B cut times in both the prelims and finals.
  • In the 1-meter diving championship final, first-year Adam Wesson placed third in 326.35, and sophomore Luke Foster finished fifth in 325.40. Both divers eclipsed the NCAA standard of 300.
  • Sophomore Marcus Holmquist won the B final of the 50 free for ninth overall with an NCAA B cut time of 19.60. Junior Ryan Linnihan came in fourth in that race for 12th overall with an NCAA B cut time of 19.90. First-year Anthony Rincon placed third in the C final for 19th overall in 20.32.
  • Also competing in the 500 free, first-year Arik Katz took second in the B final (10th overall) in an NCAA B cut time of 4:20.18, and first-year Ben Littlejohn won the C final (17th overall) in an NCAA B cut time of 4:91.94.
  • In the consolation finals of 1-meter diving, sophomore Nick Nocita came in third for 11th place overall with a score of 271.30.

Harvard Highlights: Prelims

  • First-year Shane Washart took first place in heat four – and first place overall – in the 500 free prelims with an NCAA B cut time of 4:18.26. Sophomore Cole Kuster followed in second in heat four – and second overall – behind an NCAA B cut time of 4:19.48. Both Washart and Kuster secured spots in the A final.
  • First-year Arik Katz (fourth in heat two, 14th overall, B final, 4:23.81) and first-year Ben Littlejohn (sixth in heat three, 17th overall, C final, 4:25.25) also competed in the 500 free prelims.
  • The Crimson sent three student-athletes to the A final of the 200 IM. Junior Jared Simpson won heat four – third overall – with an NCAA B cut time of 1:44.97, sophomore Will Grant captured heat five – fourth overall – with an NCAA B cut time of 1:45.28, and senior Jake Johnson came in third in heat four – seventh overall – with an NCAA B cut time of 1:45.28. First-year Aayush Deshpande finished 25th overall (1:48.65).
  • Harvard tallied five NCAA B cut swims in the 50 free prelims with four student-athletes advancing to the A final. Senior Dean Farris led the way, finishing first overall with an NCAA B cut time of 19.37.
  • Senior Raphael Marcoux came in fifth overall in an NCAA B cut time of 19.70, senior Mahlon Reihman finished seventh overall with an NCAA B cut time of 19.72, and junior Umitcan Gures placed eighth overall with an NCAA B cut time of 19.77. Sophomore Marcus Holmquist finished 10th overall in an NCAA B cut time of 19.84, junior Ryan Linnihan placed 14th in 20.17, and first-year Anthony Rincon came in 21st in 20.50.
  • In the 1-meter prelims, first-year Adam Wesson placed second (346.75), sophomore Luke Foster came in sixth (304.15), and sophomore Nick Nocita finished ninth (278.60). Both Wesson and Foster eclipsed the NCAA standard of 300 and advanced to the A final while Nocita proceeded to the B final.

Harvard continues competition at the Ivy League Championships tomorrow – Friday, Feb. 25 – with prelims at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m. The day's finals include the 1000 free, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, and 400 medley relay.
