No. 18 Men’s Swimming and Diving Claims Five Events, Stays in First on Ivies Day Three

PRINCETON, N.J. – First-year Shane Washart, junior Umitcan Gures, senior Dean Farris, and sophomore Will Grant all won individual races, and the Crimson captured the 400 medley relay as No. 18 Harvard University men's swimming and diving remained in first place in the team standings of the 2022 Ivy League Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
 
On day three of four at the championship, Gures set school, meet, and pool records with an NCAA A cut time in the 100-yard butterfly while the quartet of Farris, junior Jared Simpson, Gures, and sophomore Marcus Holmquist established new school, meet, and pool records in the 400-yard medley relay.
 
In the team standings, Harvard holds first place with 1060 points – 36 points ahead of second-place Princeton (1024). Penn (675) and Brown (672) round out the top half of the rankings.
 
Washart captured the 1000-yard freestyle in the night's first final while Farris and Grant took the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke respectively. A total of 10 Harvard student-athletes posted NCAA B cut swims on the day in addition to an NCAA B cut in the 400 medley relay.
 
Through three days, the Crimson has tallied nine event wins – including all four relays – three NCAA A cut swims, five school records, four meet records, and four pool records. A total of 16 Harvard student-athletes have posted NCAA B cut times in 25 events in addition to two NCAA B cut relay times.

Harvard Highlights: Finals

  • Junior Umitcan Gures captured the 100-yard butterfly for the third straight season behind an NCAA A cut time of 44.89, setting school, meet, and pool records in the process. Harvard has won the event 13 times in total, including each of the last four.
  • Harvard took two of the top three, three of the top five, and five of the top seven spots in the 100 fly with all four swimmers eclipsing the NCAA B mark. First-year Aayush Deshpande came in third in 46.70, senior Mahlon Reihman finished fifth in 46.87, and senior Raphael Marcoux placed seventh in 47.12.
  • Closing the night with the 400-yard medley relay, Harvard won the event with an NCAA B cut time of 3:05.72, establishing new school, meet, and pool records in the process. The group of senior Dean Farris, junior Jared Simpson, junior Umitcan Gures, and sophomore Marcus Holmquist helped the Crimson win the event for the 20th time and for the third time in the last four seasons. Farris won the 400 medley relay for the third time while Gures won it for the second time.
  • Senior Dean Farris won the 200-yard freestyle for the third time with an NCAA B cut time of 1:32.67, adding to his titles in the event from 2018 and 2019. Harvard won the event for the 19th time in program history and for the fourth straight season.
  • Sophomore Will Grant captured the 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA B cut time of 46.58 while first-year Anthony Rincon followed him in third place with an NCAA B cut time of 47.48. Harvard won the event for the 18th time and for the third time in the last four seasons after Farris claimed the title in 2018 and 2019.
  • First-year Shane Washart won the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 8:52.09 as the Crimson took three of the top four spots in the event. First-year Arik Katz placed third in 8:56.05, and sophomore Cole Kuster came in fourth in 9:00.33. Sophomore Noah Brune finished eighth in 9:02.90.
  • The Crimson won the event for the 17th time in program history and for the fourth straight time. Kuster captured the event in 2020.
  • Senior Jake Johnson placed second in the 400-yard individual medley with an NCAA B cut time of 3:45.45. First-year Dylan Rhee placed fifth in the C final – 21st overall – in 3:55.46.
  • Junior Jared Simpson placed third in the 100-yard breaststroke with an NCAA B cut time of 52.55. He came within 0.06 seconds of the school record of 52.49. First-year Dylan Rhee finished 20th overall in 55.66.
  • Also competing in the 200 free, first-year Ben Littlejohn placed fifth in an NCAA B cut time of 1:35.14. Sophomore Marcus Holmquist won the B final – ninth overall – in an NCAA B cut time of 1:35.64, and junior Ryan Linnihan finished 15th overall in 1:39.08.
  • In the consolation finals of the 3-meter diving event, first-year Adam Wesson came in third – 11th overall – with a 314.30 while sophomore Nick Nocita finished eighth – 16th overall – with a 255.45. 

Harvard Highlights: Prelims

  • Senior Jake Johnson secured a spot in the A final of the 400 IM with an NCAA B cut time of 3:49.79, finishing third in heat two and sixth overall. First-year Dylan Rhee finished seventh in heat three – 23rd overall – in 4:00.25 to advance to the C final.
  • Harvard advanced all four of its swimmers to the championship final of the 100 fly with three student-athletes registering NCAA B cut times.
  • Junior Umitcan Gures won heat four of the 100 fly – second overall – with an NCAA B cut time of 45.87, senior Raphael Marcoux came in third in heat four – fourth overall – in an NCAA B cut time of 46.85, and first-year Aayush Deshpande finished fifth in heat four – sixth overall – in an NCAA B cut time of 47.23. Senior Mahlon Reihman won heat two – seventh overall – with a time of 47.44, just 0.01 seconds off the NCAA B standard.
  • In the 200 free prelims, senior Dean Farris (first in heat four, second overall, 1:35.38, NCAA B) and first-year Ben Littlejohn (third in heat three, seventh overall, 1:36.35) both secured spots in the championship final. Littlejohn came within 0.03 seconds of the NCAA B mark.
  • Also competing in the 200 free, sophomore Marcus Holmquist (second in heat four, 10th overall, 1:36.80) and junior Ryan Linnihan (second in heat one, 16th overall, 1:38.41) both advanced to the consolation final.
  • Junior Jared Simpson took first place in heat four – second overall – in the 100 breast with an NCAA B cut time of 52.55. Swimming an exhibition in heat two, first-year Quinn Harron clocked an NCAA B cut time of 54.10. First-year Dylan Rhee moved to the C final, placing seventh in heat two – 20th overall – in 56.63.
  • Closing the swimming prelims with the 100 back, Harvard took two of the top three spots in the event. Sophomore Will Grant won heat four – second overall – with an NCAA B cut time of 47.04 while first-year Anthony Rincon came in second in heat two – third overall – behind an NCAA B cut time of 47.28.
  • In the 3-meter diving prelims, sophomore Luke Foster placed eighth with a score of 317.95 to advance to the championship final. Sophomore Nick Nocita (310.35, 10th) and first-year Adam Wesson (304.30, 11th) both proceeded to the consolation final.
  • As a team, Harvard tallied nine NCAA B cut swims in the session.

Harvard concludes competition at the Ivy League Championships tomorrow – Saturday, Feb. 26 – with prelims at 11:00 a.m. and finals at 6:00 p.m. The day's finals include the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 3-meter diving, and 400 free relay.
