No. 1 Women’s Squash Posts Convincing 9-0 Win Over No. 8 Penn, Advances to Howe Cup Semifinals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 1 Harvard (13-0) had little trouble in its opening match of the 2022 Howe Cup, powering past No. 8 Penn (8-8) by a score of 9-0 in a quarterfinal match at the Murr Squash Center on Friday afternoon. 
 
The Crimson controlled play from start to finish, winning all nine matches in either three or four games. Amira Singh, Evie Coxon and Marina Stefanoni all notched wins in the opening wave to start things off. Habiba Eldafrawy, Amina Yousry and Brecon Welch continued the momentum with three more Harvard victories, before Hana Moataz, Serena Daniel and Binney Huffman sealed the sweep. 
 
With the win, the Crimson advances to tomorrow's semifinals to face Yale, an opponent it defeated, 7-2, less than a month ago. 

Harvard Highlights / Game Notes 

  • The win is the 96th straight victory for the Crimson and the program's 19th consecutive win in the Howe Cup. 
  • Harvard is aiming for a seventh-straight Howe Cup title and 21st overall. 
  • The Crimson outscored the Quakers 27-3 for the day. 
  • Amina Yousry lost only 10 points in her match against Avni Anand, the fewest points dropped by a Harvard player. 
  • The Crimson has not lost a match at the fourth or fifth positions this season, going a combined 26-0 at these spots.  
  • Serena Daniel improves to 11-0 as an individual for the year. 
  • The match is Harvard's fourth 9-0 win this season as a team. 
  • Mike Way, the Gregory Lee '87 and Russell Ball '88 Endowed Coach for Squash at Harvard University, is now 29-2 in Howe Cup matches during his tenure. 
  • Harvard now leads the all-time series against Penn, 50-7, and has won the last nine times the schools have met. The Crimson finished 2-0 vs. the Quakers this season.
