No. 6/6 Women’s Ice Hockey Faces Boston College for Beanpot Glory

BOSTON, Mass. – No. 6/6 Harvard (17-6-0, 13-4-0 ECAC Hockey) is hoping to capture its first Beanpot crown since 2015 as the Crimson takes on Boston College (17-11-0, 14-8-0 Hockey East) in the Championship Game of the 43rd Annual Women's Beanpot Tournament. 
 
The contest is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start and will be played at Northeastern's Matthews Arena. The game will be broadcast live on NESN+ as well as College SportsLive. 
 
Harvard took down Boston University, 4-1, in the tournament's opening round last Tuesday, while BC upset host Northeastern, 3-1, to advance to the final. 
 
Both teams enter playing well of late. Boston College has won a season-best seven straight while Harvard has been victorious in eight of its last nine.

What to Know

  • Harvard has won 14 Beanpot titles all-time, second behind Northeastern (17). The program's last Beanpot triumph came back in 2015. 
  • The Crimson has an all-time record of 50-34-2 in the Beanpot. Harvard is 14-15-0 in 29 Championship appearances all-time, its last one coming in 2019. 
  • Harvard is 41-21-1 vs. the Eagles all-time including a 17-10-0 mark in the Beanpot. The programs have faced each other in the Beanpot finals eight times, with Harvard going 5-3-0 in these matchups. Boston College took the last Beanpot meeting, winning 3-1 in the 2020 consolation game. 
  • The meeting is the second this season between Harvard and Boston College. The Crimson defeated the Eagles, 5-2, back on Nov. 9 at Bright Landry Hockey Center. Harvard's Becca Gilmore scored twice that night, while Anne Bloomer, Maryna Macdonald and Dominique Petrie each had a goal. 
  • The Crimson is 3-0-0 this season against Hockey East opponents beating UNH, Boston College and Boston University. 
  • Junior winger Anne Bloomer has been on a tear for the Crimson of late and is leading all of Division I with 0.78 goals per game. She has scored six goals in her last five games and dished out a career-high three assists in Harvard's win at Cornell last Saturday. Bloomer has already set new career marks in points (28), goals (18) and assists (10). 
  • Harvard's top forward line has been stellar all season long totaling 91 points, nearly 42 percent of the team's total output. All three players are coming off three-point efforts at Cornell. The group combined for a season-high 11 points vs. Clarkson on Jan. 28. 
  • The Crimson remains excellent in third periods, outscoring opponents 38-18 in the final frame. Harvard is 16-0-0 when leading through period number two, and a combined 31-1-0 over its last two seasons when ahead through 40 minutes. 
  • Boston College is led offensively by the trio Abby Newhook (16-13-28), Kelly Browne (8-19-27) and Hannah Bilka (11-15-26). Over the team's current win streak, Browne has totaled 13 points and five multi-point games, while Newcomb has scored in all seven wins. The first-year Newcomb was named Hockey East's Rookie of the Month for the month of January. 

At the Helm: 

Katey Stone, The Landry Family Head Coach for Harvard Women's Ice Hockey, is in her 27th year at the helm of the women's hockey program. Prior to the 2021-22 season, Stone compiled a 494-253-54 record. During Summer 2021, Stone was named the recipient of USA Hockey's Distinguished Achievement Award, recognizing a U.S. citizen who has made hockey his or her profession, and has made outstanding contributions, on or off the ice, to the sport in America. No stranger to trailblazing in the sport, Stone was the first woman to be recognized for the award. Through her tenure at Harvard, Stone has coached six Patty Kazmaier Award winners, 24 All America selections, 13 Olympians and 11 NWHL/CWHL Draft picks. Her teams have won 11 Beanpot championships, seven ECAC Tournament titles and have advanced to the NCAA Tournament 11 times.

Up Next: 

Harvard jumps back into ECAC Hockey play this coming weekend when the Crimson takes on Princeton and Quinnipiac on Friday and Saturday. Both games will start at 3 p.m. with Saturday's game vs. Quinnipiac serving as Senior Day. The contests can been viewed on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
