No. 19 Men’s Lacrosse Bests No. 13 Brown in Ivy League Opening Thriller, 12-11

Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Opening Ivy League action at home, the No. 19 Harvard men's lacrosse team (4-1, 1-0 Ivy League) bested No. 13 Brown (5-2, 0-1 Ivy League), 12-11, today at Jordan Field. The Crimson moves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win, while Brown dips to 5-2 overall and 0-1 in league action.
 
Junior Hayden Cheek led the Crimson's offense with four goals and four points. Senior Austin Madronic and first-years Owen Gaffney and Miles Botkiss each notched two goals. First-year Sam King dished out a team-best three assists. Kyle Mullin made 18 saves in net and tallied a team-high six groundballs.
 
Brown got on the board first, before Harvard leveled the score when King fed Cheek on the doorstep for the finish. The Crimson widened its margin after a behind-the-back strike from Madronic and a man-up goal from Cheek. After Brown added one more, Botkiss put the Crimson up 4-2 with his first of the day to end the opening quarter.
 
The Bears came within one after tallying a goal early in quarter two. Cheek made it a two-goal lead once more for the Crimson with a hat trick. Brown and Harvard exchanged the next two goals, with Owen Gaffney finding the back of the net. With two minutes remaining, Brown cut its deficit to one as Harvard held on to a 6-5 advantage heading into halftime.
 
Brown tied the score at the start of the third quarter, before a big face-off win from Andrew DeGennaro led to Madronic's second goal of the day. The Crimson put in two more consecutive goals after Andrew Perry converted on the extra man opportunity and Botkiss tallied another to make it a 9-6 game. Brown responded with two-straight goals of its own, until Cheek notched his fourth goal with a behind-the-back shot to give the Crimson a 10-8 lead to conclude the period.
 
Harvard came out of the gates in the fourth quarter with two quick goals to build a 12-8 lead. Brown scored three-straight after capitalizing on a man-up opportunity and added two more tallies to make it a 12-11 game with less than four minutes remaining in the game. Harvard's strong defense prevailed in the closing minutes, as the Crimson clinched a 12-11 victory.

- Hayden Cheek registered a career-high four goals and four points today.
- Harvard secured its second-straight win over a ranked opponent this season, previously defeating No. 13 Michigan, 14-9, last weekend.
- The Crimson picked up its third-straight home win against Brown, dating back to 2016, to improve to 41-35 in its all-time series.
