Former Harvard fencing assistant coach Gamal Mahmoud passed away on April 5, 2022. The Harvard fencing and entire athletic community extends its sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
Gamal Mahmoud joined the staff in 2005 as a coaching assistant for both the men's and women's fencing teams. In 2006, he helped the Crimson with the NCAA Championship.
From 2014-2016, Mahmoud helped Harvard earn 16 All-America selections, led by a national championship from Adrienne Jarocki in 2014.
In 2017-18, Mahmoud assisted the Harvard women to its 11th consecutive Beanpot victory and the men to their fifth Ivy League title in program history. Mahmoud coached now assistant coach
Eli Dershwitz to two straight NCAA Championships, helping the men and women place fifth in the tournament.
Before coming on the coaching staff at Harvard, he coached at Northeastern, Phillips Academy Andover, the Boston Fencing Club and Prise de fer Club.
In 2006, Mahmoud was named coach of the American team at the World Cup in Germany where former Harvard fencer Benjamin Ungar won the gold medal.
As a student at Alexandria University in Egypt, Mahmoud joined the fencing program and earned his bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering in 1980. He became a Level A fencer in all three weapons and was a member of the Egyptian national team
Gamal was born in Egypt in 1954 and moved to the United States in 2001 where he immediately became involved in the world of fencing.
