Baseball Travels to Yale for Final Ivy League Series

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball travels to Yale University for a three-game series at George H.W. Bush Field with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 14 beginning at 11:30 a.m. and a single game on Sunday, May 15 at noon in the final Ivy League series in 2022 for both programs.

What to Know: Team Notes

  • The Crimson (18-20, 9-9 Ivy) closes its 2022 regular season with a three-game set against the Bulldogs (18-17, 8-10 Ivy) with the two teams currently in fourth and fifth place respectively in the Ivy League standings.
  • Harvard is set to throw sophomore RHP Chris Clark (2-2, 3.18 ERA) in game one, first-year RHP Sean Matson (3-3, 5.45 ERA) in game two, and senior RHP Jaren Zinn (2-3, 7.75 ERA) in game three.
  • Three Crimson – sophomore shortstop Jake Berger, junior first baseman Logan Bravo, and sophomore outfielder Chris Snopek – have earned First Team CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for their combined work in the classroom and in competition.
  • Harvard leads Yale in the all-time series, 203-187-1. In the two teams' last series in 2019, the Crimson took two of three games, winning game one, 10-8, and game two, 3-0. The two teams first met in 1868.
  • In its last outing, Harvard beat Penn in a rescheduled game three of that series, 4-3. Sophomore right-hander Chris Clark threw 5.0 innings with nine strikeouts in the start while sophomore Chris Snopek hit the go-ahead two-run single in the eighth.
  • The Crimson went 3-1 during the week of Apr. 18-24, earning an 18-2 win over Merrimack (Apr. 19) with a season-high run total and season-best four home runs before taking two of three games from Princeton (Apr. 23-24). Against the Tigers, Harvard captured game one (2-0) and game three (14-10, 12 innings).
  • In Ivy League play, Harvard has hit .296 as a team with a .373 on-base percentage. In 18 games, the Crimson has totaled 123 runs, 194 hits, 42 doubles, and 16 home runs. Harvard has tallied double-figure hits in 11 of 18 Ivy games.
  • In its first home games in 1,049 days, Harvard took two of three games from Brown, sweeping the doubleheader on Apr. 2, 17-7 and 7-1. For the series, Harvard tallied 29 runs, 47 hits, 11 doubles, three triples, and 25 RBIs. The Crimson posted a .405 team batting average and .455 team on-base percentage.
  • In its first Ivy League series in over 1,000 days, Harvard swept a three-game set from Cornell. The Crimson took game one, 7-5, captured game two, 11-5, and rallied to win game three, 12-11. Harvard totaled 32 hits and 20 walks across the series, posting a .414 on-base percentage and .296 batting average.
  • Harvard has tallied a pair of wins over teams from Power Five conferences this season. The Crimson opened the year with an 11-6 win over the ACC's Miami in its first game in 719 days. Harvard also earned a 5-0 shutout win over UCLA of the Pac-12.
  • In the week four (Apr. 12) NEIBA Division I Coaches Poll, Harvard checked in at No. 4. The Crimson ranked in the No. 2 spot for the previous two weeks. Harvard fell out of the poll in week five (Apr. 20) for the first time since the rankings began on Mar. 22.

What to Know: Batting Notes

  • In Ivy League play, five different Crimson batters have posted a batting average above .300, including junior Will Jacobsen (.355), junior Logan Bravo (.339), sophomore Peter Messervy (.333), first-year George Cooper (.322), and sophomore Jake Berger (.310).
  • Junior Logan Bravo has posted a team-best .366 batting average alongside a .422 on-base percentage on the season, while leading the team in home runs (seven), doubles (15), hits (52), slugging percentage (.620), and RBIs (42). Bravo ranks third in the Ivy League in doubles, fourth in RBIs, fifth in batting average, sixth in slugging, and seventh in hits. He has tallied 18 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games on the year.
  • Bravo earned Ivy League Player of the Week on May 2 after hitting .727 in the Dartmouth series with two home runs, eight RBIs, and three doubles. He recorded two home runs, including a grand slam, and career-high seven RBIs vs. Merrimack (Apr. 19). Bravo hit .462 (6-for-13) in the Brown series with five RBIs, three doubles, and four runs. In the UCLA series, Bravo hit .500 (7-for-14) with a home run, two doubles, an RBI, and three runs scored. Bravo hit .400 (6-for-15) in the Cal Poly series, including three doubles. He went 5-for-13 (.385) with two doubles and four runs scored in the Rice series.
  • Sophomore Chris Snopek leads the team in on-base percentage (.433), while tallying a .336 batting average, 48 hits, 26 runs, 21 RBIs, and six doubles. Snopek ranks seventh in the Ivy League in OBP and has totaled 15 multi-hit games on the year. He earned Ivy League Rookie of the week for the second time on May 9.
  • Snopek hit .545 (6-for-11) with four RBIs, four runs, two doubles, and a triple in the Brown series. In his first Ivy series, Snopek posted a .455 average and .626 OBP vs. Cornell. Snopek hit .438 (7-for-16) in the Cal Poly series and earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors. He hit .500 with three RBIs, three runs, and a double in the Rice series. He totaled three hits, three runs scored, two RBIs, and his first career home run against Miami.
  • Sophomore Jake Berger has registered a .277 batting average, .408 on-base percentage, 34 runs scored, eight doubles, 26 RBIs, and a team-high seven home runs. Berger ranks second in the Ivy League in walks (28). In Ivy play, he has hit .310 with a .430 OBP and five homers. In the Columbia series, he hit .462 (6-for-13) with two home runs.
  • Junior Will Jacobsen has posted a .313 batting average this season and has hit .355 in Ivy League play with two home runs and 10 RBIs. He has registered 14 multi-hit games this season. In the Columbia series, he hit .615 (8-for-13) with a home run. Against Merrimack (Apr. 19), he notched a career-high six RBIs, including a grand slam.
  • Jacobsen earned Ivy League Player of the Week on Apr. 25 following the Princeton series. For the week, he hit .474 (9-for-19) with 10 RBIs, a home run, two doubles, three runs, and a .524 OBP, while throwing 6.1 innings with a 0.00 ERA, permitting just two hits and three walks with six strikeouts.
  • Sophomore Ben Rounds has posted a .284 batting average with 29 hits, 18 RBIs, 24 runs, 11 doubles, and a .398 on-base percentage. In Ivy play, he has hit .290 with a .384 OBP. He hit .571 (8-for-14) with five RBIs, three doubles, and five runs in the Brown series. In the last two games of the Cornell series, he went 4-for-9 with five RBIs. 

What to Know: Pitching Notes

  • Sophomore right-handed reliever Jay Driver has thrown 26.2 innings of relief this season, allowing just six runs for a 2.02 ERA. He has posted four saves, 41 strikeouts to 11 walks, and a 1.09 WHIP. In Ivy play, he has posted a 2.35 ERA, permitting four runs over 15.1 innings. He earned saves at Rice (Mar. 4), at Cal Poly (Mar. 12), in game two at Cornell (Mar. 25), and in game one vs. Princeton (Apr. 23). He ranks second in the Ivy League in saves (four).
  • Sophomore right-hander Chris Clark has not allowed an earned run in nine of his 13 appearances this season. He has posted a 3.18 ERA on the year, permitting 12 earned runs over 34.0 innings. In his first career start, he hurled 5.0 shutout innings in the win in game one vs. Princeton (Apr. 23) with a career-high 11 strikeouts. Clark earned the win at Cornell (Mar. 25), hurling 4.2 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. He has posted two saves this year – at Rice (Mar. 5) and vs. Brown (Apr. 2).
  • Sophomore left-hander Uday Narottam has tossed 20.2 innings of relief this year, allowing 10 earned runs for a 4.35 ERA. He earned a save against Cal Poly (Mar. 13), throwing 3.2 innings without allowing a hit.
  • First-year right-handed pitcher Sean Matson has thrown 36.1 innings this season, making appearances as a reliever and starter with 43 strikeouts and a 5.45 ERA. Matson tossed 6.2 shutout innings with seven strikeouts in the game two win vs. Dartmouth (Apr. 30). He notched a career-high nine strikeouts at Cornell (Mar. 25). Matson earned his first career win at Cal Poly (Mar. 13), pitching 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. He threw 4.0 innings of relief against Miami (Feb. 26), permitting just one run on two hits with six strikeouts.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Adam Stone has posted a 5.28 ERA with 32 strikeouts over 30.2 innings, while holding opponents to a .264 batting average. He earned a win vs. Brown (Apr. 2), hurling 6.0 innings and permitting one run with six strikeouts. Against Rice (Mar. 4), he threw 5.0 shutout innings, striking out eight. He made his collegiate debut against Miami (Feb. 25), striking out four batters over 4.0 innings.
  • Junior left-handed pitcher Tim Williamson has notched 40 strikeouts and a .244 opponent batting average over 42.1 innings on the season. He ranks sixth in the Ivy League in opponent batting average. Williamson earned Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing 6.0 shutout innings with six strikeouts in a victory over UCLA (Mar. 19). He gained a win vs. Brown (Apr. 2), throwing 5.0 innings and allowing one earned run with a season-high nine strikeouts. He earned a win at Rice (Mar. 5), tossing 6.0 innings and permitting one run with seven strikeouts.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Jaren Zinn ranks seventh in the Ivy League with 55 strikeouts over 36.0 innings pitched. He earned the win in game three against Cal Poly Mar. 12) behind a career-high 11 strikeouts. Zinn threw 6.0 innings and allowed just one run on four hits and two walks. He gained Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors for the effort. He tallied 10 strikeouts over 5.0 innings vs. Brown (Apr. 3) and then eight strikeouts over 5.0 innings vs. Penn (Apr. 10).

Bill Decker, The Joseph J. O'Donnell '67 Head Coach for Harvard Baseball, is in his 10th season as the leader of the Crimson. The 2019 Ivy League Coach of the Year and 2019 NEIBA Coach of the Year led the Crimson to the 2019 Ivy League title. He holds a 143-189 record at Harvard and a 640-446 career record as a collegiate head coach.
