Harvard Athletics to Install New Videoboards, Audio System at Historic Harvard Stadium

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Athletics is excited to improve and enhance the gameday atmosphere at Harvard Stadium through the upcoming installation of a new videoboard, a new ribbon board, and a state-of-the-art distributed audio system at the 119-year old historic venue.

"Thanks to the support of the Friends of Harvard Football and generous alumni—including a lead gift from the Powder Mill Foundation in honor of loyal alumnus Louis J. Appell Jr. '47—this project will upgrade the Crimson Football experience for our student-athletes and fans and generate increased energy and excitement on the field and in the stands," said Erin McDermott, The John D. Nichols '53 Family Director of Athletics.

Sitting atop the Murr Center at the northeast end of the Stadium, the main videoboard will now measure 16.8 feet by 45.6 feet, nearly 50 percent larger than its predecessor which was installed in 2008. The new board boasts a 10mm display and allows for future HDR video capability.

"This project allows us to bring in new technology and support the video and audio quality of today, thus removing aging technology that has become increasingly difficult to maintain, and source replacement parts in a timely manner," said Yulander Wells, Jr., Deputy Athletics Director – External Operations and Relations.

Joining the new videoboard will be a ribbon board, a new addition to Harvard Stadium. Installed on the Murr Center wall behind the endzone, the 10mm display will have an active display area that is 3.6 feet tall and 90 feet wide, and be capable of showcasing branding opportunities, game-in-progress statistical information, out-of-town scores, and more.

The audio system, meanwhile, will be fully distributed throughout the stadium, bringing the gameday experience to life for fans sitting in every section. The new system will include 17 roof-mounted loudspeakers, 17 roof-mounted subwoofers, and 64 fill speakers, giving Harvard Stadium a sound quality that is unrivaled among New England schools.

The Harvard football team opens the 2022 season on Friday, Sept. 16, when it plays host to Merrimack College at 7 p.m. ET.
