Football Leads Ivy in Preseason Phil Steele Honorees

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard Football led all Ivy League schools with 12 honorees on the 2022 Phil Steele Preseason All-Ivy Team. The Crimson tallied eight first-team selections and four second-team honorees while junior running back Aidan Borguet earned Preseason Offensive Player of the Year recognition and junior defensive back Alex Washington garnered Second Team FCS Preseason All-America honors.

Representing Harvard on the first-team offense were a pair of juniors in Borguet and offensive lineman Alec Bank. The defense, meanwhile, was painted Crimson with seniors James Herring (DB) and Jack McGowan (LB) leading the way. Joining the duo were juniors Nate Leskovec (DL) and Washington and sophomore defensive lineman Thor Griffith. Senior kicker Jonah Lipel rounded out Harvard's first-team contingent.

The Crimson boasted one second-team offensive pick in junior tight end Haven Montefalco. Seniors Truman Jones (DL) and Max Jones (DB) found themselves on the defensive side of the ball, with junior Gavin Sharkey being named a second-team punt returner.

Borguet collected Preseason Offensive Player of the Year honors after gaining Second Team All-Ivy and Phil Steele Third Team All-Ivy League in 2021. Last fall, he ran for 602 yards on 115 carries (5.2 yards per carry) with eight rushing touchdowns.

Washington stood as one of four Ivy League student-athletes to appear on the FCS Preseason All-America teams. In 2021, Washington garnered First Team All-Ivy and Phil Steele First Team All-Ivy League after tallying an Ivy League-best four interceptions.

Harvard, which is coming off an 8-2 season in 2021, opens the 2022 campaign on Friday, Sept. 16, when it plays host to Merrimack College. Kickoff at Harvard Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET. Tickets for the season-opener and for the balance of the Crimson's home schedule are available at tickets.gocrimson.com.
