CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 10/10 Harvard (13-5-1, 11-3-0 ECACH) hosts Colgate (12-10-2, 9-3-0 ECACH) and No. 11/11 Cornell (12-6-1, 9-3-0 ECACH) in a battle of teams near the top of the league standings. The Crimson split a pair of road contests at Yale (W, 3-2 OT) and at Brown (L, 3-2) last weekend. Junior forward
Sean Farrell (2-2-4) recorded two multiple point games on the weekend, and leads the team in scoring with 29 points (12-17-29). Harvard is a perfect 7-0-0 in games at Bright-Landry Hockey Center, averaging 5.0 goals/game, while allowing just 1.6 goals per contest, and outscoring teams by a combined score of 35-11 at home.
WHAT TO KNOW
- Both Colgate and Cornell enter the weekend playing some of their best hockey of the 2022-23 season. The Raiders are 7-1-1 in their last nine games, including a win over No. 1 Quinnipiac (W, 3-2), last Saturday. Cornell is 6-1-1 in its last eight contests, also defeating Quinnipiac (W, 4-0) on Friday night last weekend. Junior forward Alex Young, with 12 points (8-4-12) in his last eight games, has been excellent for Colgate. For Cornell, junior forward Gabriel Seger (4-8-12 in his last eight games) has been red hot of late. Both teams feature excellent goaltending in Colgate's Carter Gylander (12-9-2, 2.21 GAA, .925 Save%) and Cornell's Ian Shane (11-5-1, 1.73 GAA, .921 Save%).
- One of the great rivalries in all of college hockey, Harvard and Cornell have played particularly close games in recent years, three of the last four contests needing overtime to decide the game. Harvard is 2-0-2 in its last four games against the Big Red.
- Sophomore forward Matthew Coronato and junior forwards Sean Farrell and Alex Laferriere are Harvard's nominees for the Hobey Baker Award. Farrell leads Harvard in scoring with 29 points (12-17-29) and is third in the nation in points per game (1.53). Coronato has 21 points (11-10-21) as Farrell's linemate. Laferriere is second on the team in scoring with 23 points (10-13-23). Harvard has had four winners of college hockey's most prestigious award (T-2nd among all schools) - Jimmy Vesey (2016), Lane MacDonald (1989), Scott Fusco (1986), and Mark Fusco (1983).
- First-year forward Joe Miller (11-5-16) leads all ECAC Hockey first-years in goal scoring, and is one of 12 freshmen in college hockey with 11 or more goals. He has been red hot of late, with nine points (7-2-9) and seven goals in his last seven games. He is third among NCAA freshmen with an average of .58 goals per game.
- Starting goaltender Mitchell Gibson (8-4-1, 2.26, .918) has been one of the nation's best in net, and was named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List last week. He entered the year as one of the most experienced goaltenders in the nation and he currently has a career 37-22-5 mark in 65 games played, including a 2.34 GAA and .917 Save %. Junior goaltender Derek Mullahy, the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week on Jan. 16, has also been fantastic in net at 4-0-0 with a 1.00 GAA and .956 Save%.
