Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore forward
Matthew Coronato scored an OT game-winner after senior defenseman
Henry Thrun tied the game with 40.7 seconds remaining in regulation to lift No. 10/10 Harvard men's ice hockey (14-5-1, 12-3-0 ECAC Hockey) to a dramatic 5-4 win over Colgate (12-11-2, 9-4-0 ECAC Hockey) on Friday night (Jan. 27) at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Junior forward
Alex Laferriere scored twice, sophomore forward
Zakary Karpa added a goal, and junior goaltender
Derek Mullahy made 25 saves to earn the win in net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The visiting Raiders got off to a quick start, taking a 2-0 lead midway through the opening period behind goals from Alex Young (7:35) and Ross Mitton (11:56).
But Laferriere's first period pair evened the score after 20 minutes. The first came on a shot from the half wall that trickled through Gylander at 12:22, on the shift after Colgate's second score.
The second came in the closing minutes of the period on a net front scramble, as Laferriere poked in a rebound off an initial shot by first-year
Joe Miller to tie the game at 2-2 at 18:47.
Colgate scored twice in a span of 46 seconds early in the second period to take a two goal lead once again, as Ryan McGuire (4:29) and Alex Young (5:15) scored to make it 4-2.
But Harvard responded with a big third period, outshooting the Raiders, 14-5, and eventually tying the game late.
Early on in the third, a defensive zone turnover by Colgate caused by first-year
Joe Miller led to the puck funneling to Karpa in front, who quickly found the back of the net at 2:18.
With Harvard trailing late in regulation, and Mullahy at the bench for an extra attacker, Coronato found Thrun straightaway for a one timer that rang off the post and in to even the score in the final minute.
Then in 3-on-3 overtime, Thrun found Coronato with a quick up, and the sophomore fired a wrist shot from the circle off the inside of the far post and into the net at 3:15.
