Box Score PRINCETON, N.J. – Down 3-0 with under 10 minutes to play in the third period, No. 9/10 Harvard men's ice hockey (10-3-1, 8-1-0 ECACH) orchestrated a memorable comeback, with junior forward
Alex Laferriere scoring the game-winner in OT to beat Princeton (7-9-0. 5-7-0 ECACH) at Hobey Baker Rink.
Sophomore forward
Matthew Coronato scored twice in the third period, including the game-tying goal with 2:20 to play in regulation. First-year
Joe Miller added a goal, and senior goaltender
Mitchell Gibson made 22 saves to earn the win in net.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Crimson, which had gone scoreless in five power play chances up until midway through the last period of play, earned a man advantage at 10:35 of the final frame, down 3-0.
Junior forward
Sean Farrell fed cross ice to Coronato, who found the top corner of the net at 11:58 of the 3
rd.
The Crimson had a goal waved off with just over five minutes to play, as Laferriere's stick was above the crossbar on a deflection in front, but Harvard kept pushing.
With an extra attacker on the ice, Miller scored on a great cross-ice feed from Farrell, a one-timer that beat Princeton's Ethan Pearson low with 2:30 to play.
Then Coronato tied it seconds later, as Farrell made an open-ice hit to turn the puck over, sending Coronato alone down the left wing. He fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Pearson with 2:05 to go to tie the game at 3-3.
Laferriere won it in 3-on-3 overtime on a fantastic individual effort, cutting into the high slot and firing a wrist shot into the top corner with 27.9 left in OT to win it.
Harvard had several grade A chances in the opening 20 minutes, but Pearson was at his best, stopping junior forward
Alex Laferriere and sophomore defenseman
Ian Moore on point blank chances from the slot.
The Crimson had two power play opportunities go by the wayside in the opening frame as well.
Princeton built a 3-0 lead in the second period, scoring all of its goals on special teams. A power play goal on a deflection in front by Liam Gorman gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead at 3:16.
With Harvard on the power play minutes later, Gorman struck again, putting in a rebound off a shorthanded 2-on-1 chance at 9:26.
A penalty shot goal by Adam Robbins on the same power play made the margin three midway through the contest at 9:48.
Harvard was not without its chances however, the best of which came just over a minute into the second period, when first-year forward
Casey Severo was robbed on a 2-on-0 chance with Pearson kicking out his left pad to make the stop. But Harvard trailed 3-0 entering the final 20 minutes of play, setting up the epic comeback.
