No. 17 Men's Ice Hockey Set to Open 2023-24 Season at Dartmouth

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No.­17 Harvard men's ice hockey is set to begin its 2023-24 campaign tomorrow on the road against Dartmouth. The quick trip to Hanover will see Harvard start the season with the Big Green for the fifth consecutive season. Action starts at 7:00 p.m. from Thompson Arena and will air on ESPN+.

WHAT TO KNOW

ON THE ROAD

  • Harvard is currently riding a nine-game win streak against Dartmouth dating back to February 1st, 2019. Harvard has outscored the Big Green 47-19 over that span.
  • Throughout the Ted Donato era, Harvard holds an 11-5-2 record on opening night and is 8-1-1 since 2012 with the only loss coming in overtime. 
  • Since 2018-2019, Harvard has a winning record away from Cambridge after posting a 27-18-7 record in road matchups.
  • Last season the Crimson cruised to a 5-2 victory against Dartmouth after goals from Jack Bar and Zakary Karpa helped lead the Crimson to an opening night win. 

CHASING 300

  • Ted Donato currently has 298 career wins as he looks to break the 300-win mark in the 2023-24 season.  

NATIONALLY RANKED

  • Harvard starts the 2023-24 campaign on multiple national rankings. USCHO opened the college hockey season with the Crimson checking in at No. 15 while USA Hockey had Harvard sitting at No.13 in the nation. In week four of the NCAA season, Harvard sits at No. 17 and No. 13 respectively.  

LEADING THE CRIMSON

  • Ian Moore and Zakary Karpa look to lead the Crimson this season after being named captains at the conclusion of the 2022-23 campaign. 
  • Moore a third-round selection of the Anaheim Ducks earned an All-Ivy Honorable Mention in his sophomore campaign while also being named ECAC Defender of the Month in February. Moore finished the season with a career-high 19 points (1 goal, 18 assists, 34 games) and was among the ECAC's best in +/- among d-men. 
  • Karpa a sixth-round selection of the New York Rangers was limited last season after only playing in 22 games in 22-23. Last season, Karpa (5 goals, 3 assists, 22 games) was the top face-off man for the Crimson after finishing with a win rate of 53.1%. 

BACK FOR MORE

  • Sophomore Joe Miller returns as the team leader in points from last season. After scoring 13 goals and adding 15 assists in his rookie campaign, Miller was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year and earned a spot on the ECAC All-Rookie Team after a successful first season in Cambridge. Miller led the ECAC in rookie +/- with an impressive +23 in league contests while also leading the team with an overall +/- of +27. Miller notched seven multi-point games in 2023 including three-point performances against Princeton and Northeastern. 

ON THE BLUE LINE

BETWEEN THE PIPES

  • Netminders Aku Koskenvuo and Derek Mullahy return between the pipes for the Crimson this season.
  • Mullahy appeared in six games last season while making five starts and posted a 5-0 record with a 1.70 GAA and .929 save percentage. Mullahy posted his first career shutout after a 23-save performance over St. Lawrence and earned ECAC Goaltender of the Week for his efforts. 
  • Koskenvuo, a native of Espoo, Finland appeared in two games last season, earning his first collegiate win against Brown in a 21-save showing. Koskenvuo was selected to represent his country at the U-18 World Junior Championships last season. The Finnish netminder was selected in the fifth round by the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL Draft.

THE NEW GUYS 

  • Harvard welcomes seven first-years to the program including Michael Callow, a fifth-round selection of the Anaheim Ducks, and Ben MacDonald, a third-round selection of the Seattle Kraken.

NHL DRAFT PICKS 

  • For the second year in a row, Harvard is among the national leaders in NHL draft picks playing college hockey. Checking in at No. 6 in the country, Harvard has 11 NHL draft picks currently on the roster. 

NEXT UP

Harvard returns to Bright-Landry for its home opener against Princeton at 7:00 p.m. next Friday before hosting Quinnipiac at 7:00 p.m. in a big matchup on Saturday night. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
