Box Score HAMILTON, N.Y. – Harvard Men's Ice Hockey faced off against the Colgate Raiders in its first test against the reigning champions this season. Despite a big third period goal from Ben MacDonald to force overtime, Harvard eventually fell in the shootout and was unable to pick up the extra point.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colgate opened up the first period with a goal, finding an empty pocket past Aku Koskenvuo. Harvard responded late in the period with a long slap shot goal from Ryan Fine, his second of the season.
With 5:00 left to go in period two, Colgate had a breakaway chance. They hit the top right post and it rimmed out, yet the referees reviewed the play. The call stood at no goal.
Despite Aku Koskenvuo's deflection of a Colgate shot, a Raider got the rebound and got an easy rebound goal. Harvard trailed 2-1 going into the third period.
Koskenvuo ended up with 29 saves, posting a .935 save percentage.
With 8:15 left in the third period, first-year Ben MacDonald scored on a tight angle for his first career collegiate goal. The MacDonald goal helped the Crimson survive and advance to overtime, its third time doing so this season.
Colgate scored on both attempts in the shootout while Harvard missed twice.
