US AIR FORCE ACADEMY, CO. – Harvard men's fencing returned to the strip with a strong performance at the first day of the Western Invitational. The Crimson went 3-2 over five matches, picking up wins against University of Incarnate Word, UC San Diego, and Stanford. Harvard came up short against three-time defending NCAA national champions Notre Dame and Ohio State.
The Crimson opened its time in Colorado with a 8-19 loss to top-five ranked Ohio State. Three different Harvard fencers picked up multiple wins against the Buckeyes, as
Andrew Chung, James Liao and
Kevin Sohn all earned two wins in the opening contest.
In its second round of the day, Harvard earned a 22-5 win against UIW. The saber squad was perfect against the Cardinals, as
Matthew Linsky, Tommy Choi and
Kevin Sohn all earned three wins in the second match of the day.
Jonas Hansen posted a perfect 3-0 record against UIW in epee competition.
The third match saw the Crimson fall to three-time NCAA national champions Notre Dame, 7-20. Epee fencer
Mihir Kumashi picked up two victories against the Fighting Irish. Choi also earned two victories in the third match of the event.
Harvard bounced back in its fourth round of competition, beating UC San Diego, 17-10. The foil team led the way, picking up seven victories. Chung and Liao continued to produce success on the strip, combing for six wins against the Tritons.
Prash Subbiah logged his first career victory as well.
The first day of the Western Invitational concluded with the men's team beating Stanford, 19-8. The foil combo of Chung and Liao dominated the Cardinal, as each fencer went 3-0 in the final round. In epee competition,
Anthony Malysz, Owen Jin and Hansen all generated mult-win performances.
HARVARD HIGHLIGHTS:
- Henry Lawson, Sohn, Jin, Subbiah, and Choi all earned their first career victories.
- The foil fencers combined for a team-high 29 wins on day one of the Western Invitational.
- Chung led the team in wins on the day with 12.
