US AIR FORCE ACADEMY, CO. – Harvard men's fencing finished strong at the Western Invitational, sweeping Air Force and North Carolina. Across seven matches in Colorado, the Crimson went 5-2, with four of the wins being decided by a double-digit margin.
All three weapons thrived in the 22-5 win against tournament host Air Force. Men's epee tallied eight wins against the Falcons, as four different epee fencers logged wins against Air Force. Defending NCAA Epee national champion
Jonas Hansen went 3-0 against Air Force, as
Anthony Malysz and
Owen Jin also orchestrated multi-win performances against the Falcons.
Men's foil tallied seven wins in the first round, as captains
Justin Liu and
James Chen both went undefeated against Air Force. Men's saber also fought for seven wins against the Falcons, as
Kevin Sohn and
Prash Subbiah were both a perfect 3-0.
In the final contest of the Western Invitational, men's fencing cruised to a 20-7 win against North Carolina. Men's foil led the way with eight wins, as Liu and
Andrew Chung both tallied three wins. Sohn paced men's saber to a 5-4 win, winning all three of his matches. Men's epee went 7-2 against the Tar Heels, as all five epee fencers on the roster accounted for at least one win.
Five fencers posted perfect records on the final day of the Western Invitational, as Sohn, Malysz, Liu, Chung and
Mihir Kumashi all went undefeated against Air Force and North Carolina.
Men's fencing won 116 of the 180 matches they competed in at the Western Invitational. The foil team led the men's squad in wins at the Western Invitational with 44 victories.
At the Junior World Cup in Turkey, first-year foil fencer
Daniel Zhang placed in the top-32 and earned a team gold medal.
