SANTIAGO, Chile – Harvard Men's Squash's Timothy Brownell '20 and
George Crowne '23 went head-to-head at the Pan Am Games in mixed doubles, with Brownell, representing the U.S., emerging victorious en route to a gold medal. Crowne, meanwhile, earned silver for Team Canada.
Brownell teamed with Olivia Blatchford and the duo defeated Mexico's Diana Garcia Fierro/Arturo Salazar in the quarterfinals of mixed doubles, 8-11, 11-10, 11-7. Then in the semifinals, they earned a three-set win over Catalina Pelaez/Miguel Angel Rodriguez of Colombia, 10-11, 11-2, 11-5.
On the other side of the bracket, Crowne paired with Nicole Bunyan and defeated Luis Quisquinay/Tabita Gaitan of Independent Athletes Team, 11-8, 11-9, setting up a finals clash vs. Brownell and Blatchford. Then with gold on the line, Brownell and Blatchford dispatched Crowne and Bunyan, 11-6, 10-11, 11-6.
Crowne's Canadian team, however, exacted revenge in the team competition as Canada defeated the U.S. in quarterfinals, 2-0. Brownell was on the wrong end of a five-set match with David Baillargeon, who clinched the decision for the Canadians. Crowne and Team Canada, however, was ousted from the tournament in a semifinal tilt vs. Colombia.
Despite the United States' loss in the team tournament, its time was not over, as it moved over to the consolation bracket. The Americans and Brownell were victorious vs. Chile, before they fell to Mexico.
