CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball opens its 2023 season with a four-game series against the University of Pittsburgh from Feb. 24-26 as part of the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida.
What to Know
- The four-game set against the Panthers includes the series opener on Friday, Feb. 24 at 1:00 p.m. (FloBaseball), a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 25 beginning at 11:30 a.m. (FloBaseball), and the series finale on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 12:30 p.m. (FloBaseball). Saturday's twin bill will feature a nine-inning first game and seven-inning second game. The Crimson will compete at Centennial Park's Field C10 on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25 prior to playing on Field C9 on Feb. 26.
- Harvard's weekend rotation is set to feature RHP Jay Driver (1-1, 1.91 - 2022 Stats) in game one, RHP Chris Clark (2-3, 3.08 ERA - 2022 Stats) in game two, RHP Sean Matson (3-3, 5.31 ERA - 2022 Stats) in game three, and RHP Will Jacobsen (2-2, 5.28 ERA - 2022 Stats) in game four.
- The Crimson is set to compete against Pittsburgh for the first time in program history. Harvard will open the season with an ACC opponent for the second straight year after facing Miami to begin the 2022 season.
- The Crimson is set to make three visits to the state of Florida and one visit to the state of Texas over the first four weekends of the season. Harvard is set to log approximately 9,135 flight miles over the course of the four trips.
- Harvard was selected to finish fourth in the 2023 Ivy League Baseball Preseason Media Poll. The Crimson totaled 75 points to land in the top half of the eight-team poll. Columbia took the top spot with 124 points and 12 first-place votes. Penn (113 points, three first-place votes) and Dartmouth (91 points, one first-place vote) claimed the second and third spots. Yale (68 points), Brown (45), Princeton (31), and Cornell (29) rounded out the fifth through eighth spots in the poll.
- Harvard brings back its entire offensive lineup from the 2022 season. That group includes first baseman Logan Bravo (.355 average, 16 doubles, eight home runs, 44 RBIs), third baseman Will Jacobsen (.327 average, 48 hits, three homers, 19 RBIs), and left fielder Chris Snopek (.323 average, 50 hits, 22 RBIs) as players who hit above .300 last spring.
- The Crimson welcomes back its top five pitchers based on ERA, including Jay Driver (1.91 ERA, 45 strikeouts in 28.1 innings, four saves), Chris Clark (3.08 ERA, 47 strikeouts in 38.0 innings), Uday Narottam (4.57 ERA), Will Jacobsen (5.28 ERA), and Sean Matson (5.31 ERA, 49 strikeouts in 42.1 innings).
- Harvard returns all five student-athletes who earned All-Ivy in 2022. That group includes relief pitcher Jay Driver, starting pitcher Chris Clark, second baseman George Cooper, first baseman Logan Bravo, and third baseman Will Jacobsen.
- Harvard earned the ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award for the sixth straight year for its achievements in the classroom during the 2021-22 academic year.
- Highlights from the Crimson's 2023 schedule include three separate trips to the state of Florida to open the year prior to a visit to the state of Texas, its first Ivy series at Penn (Mar. 25-26) the home opener vs. Holy Cross (Mar. 28), its first Ivy home series vs. Princeton (Apr. 1-2), the Baseball Beanpot, the final series of the regular season at home vs. Yale (May 13-14), and a new format for the Ivy League Tournament (May 19-22) which will include four teams.
- As a team, the Crimson finished in a tie for fourth place in the Ivy League standings in 2022, posting a 19-22 overall record and 10-11 Ivy League mark. Harvard recorded a pair of wins over Power Five opponents during its non-conference season, topping Miami – 11-6 in the season opener – and UCLA – in a 5-0 shutout victory.
