AUSTIN, Texas – Harvard senior
Jared Simpson and junior
Marcus Holmquist have been named to the inaugural Academic All-America Men's Swimming and Diving Third Team as selected by the College Sports Communicators (CSC).
Simpson and Holmquist are part of a 35-athlete Academic All-America squad -- spread across three teams -- and are lone the honorees from the Ivy League. As a group, the Division I team boasted a 3.85 average GPA.
To be eligible for Academic All-America accolades, student-athletes must have been named to the Academic All-District Team, which was announced on Feb. 28. On that day,
Will Grant and
Ryan Linnihan were recognized, along with Simpson and Holmquist, for having participated in at least 50 percent of the Crimson's competitions, while having a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale and be at least a sophomore academically and athletically. From there, CSC's membership cast its All-America vote by using the All-District ballot.
The duo's Academic All-America status marks the seventh and eighth time in which a Harvard men's swimming and diving athlete has received recognition from CSC, formerly the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Prior to 2022-23, however, the sport was part of a larger group named "at-large," which encompassed several sports across Division I.
Simpson and Holmquist will be in action later this week at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They will be joined by relay teammates Grant and Linnihan, and individual qualifiers
Umitcan Gures and
Adam Wesson. The action runs from Wednesday-Saturday.
