Baseball Plays at No. 11 Boston College in Beanpot Championship Game Tuesday

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball plays at No. 11 Boston College in the championship game of The Baseball Beanpot on Tuesday, Apr. 11 at 5:30 p.m. (ACCNX) as the Crimson enters the contest on a six-game winning streak and a 9-2 record in its last 11 games.

What to Know

  • The Crimson (11-16) will meet the Eagles (21-9) in the title game of The Baseball Beanpot at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at the Harrington Athletics Village in Brighton, Mass. In the semifinal round on Apr. 4, Harvard beat Northeastern, 4-3, while BC topped Massachusetts, 13-12.
  • RHP Will Jacobsen (0-2, 7.89 ERA) is set to start for the Crimson. BC will counter with RHP Eric Schroeder (4-1, 5.65 ERA).
  • Harvard has won five Beanpot titles all-time including in 1991, 1998 (co), 2005, 2014, and 2018. The tournament began in 1990. The Crimson has posted a 20-36-1 record all-time in the tournament, including a 4-8 record in the championship game and a 5-14-1 mark against Boston College. The Crimson is 1-6 all-time against BC in the championship game. Harvard beat BC in the title game in 1991.
  • Harvard trails Boston College in the all-time series, 51-62-3, in a series that backs to the year 1900. The two teams last met on May 1, 2019 with BC taking a 2-1 decision. Prior to 2020, the two teams had met in every season from 1955-2019.
  • The Crimson earned its third straight Ivy League series win to open its conference slate as it swept Dartmouth from Apr. 8-9, taking 6-3, 10-6, and 9-1 decisions. Harvard totaled 38 hits over the three games, notching double-figure hits in all three contests. Each of Harvard's starting pitchers threw at least 7.0 innings in the series.
  • In the semifinals of The Baseball Beanpot, the Crimson came back from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game at 2-2 and then plated two runs in the top of the ninth to overcome a 3-2 deficit, snapping a 10-game win streak for the Huskies, who entered the contest with a 22-4 record.
  • In its first home Ivy series of the season, Harvard swept a Sunday doubleheader from Princeton to gain a 2-1 series win over the Tigers. The Crimson won games two (11-8) and three (9-6) of the series to take the set. Harvard totaled 29 runs, 27 hits, and 22 walks over the course of the three-game series.
  • In Harvard's home opener, Crimson relievers combined to allow just one run over 6.2 innings, and senior Hunter Baldwin and first-year Gio Colasante each drove in two runs as Harvard beat Holy Cross, 6-5, at O'Donnell Field on Mar. 28.
  • In its Ivy League opening series, Harvard earned a 2-1 road series win over Penn in Philadelphia. The Crimson captured the series opener, 3-2, in 10 innings before claiming a 7-3 decision in the series finale. Junior Jake Berger and senior Logan Bravo each hit home runs in the opener before sophomore Sean Matson and first-year Callan Fang combined to limit the Quakers to three runs in the finale.
  • Harvard ranks ninth in the NCAA in doubles per game (2.48) as a team while junior Peter Messervy stands fourth in the nation in doubles per game (0.50) as an individual. Messervy leads the Ivy League with 13 doubles. Harvard has hit at least two doubles in 21 games this year and knocked a season-high six in game two vs. FIU (Mar. 4).
  • As a team, Harvard leads the Ivy League in doubles (67) and stands third in average (.274), runs (173), hits (260), home runs (27), and RBIs (156). In Ivy play, Harvard ranks second in doubles (21) and RBIs (62), while sitting third in average (.290), runs (66), and hits (91). The Crimson has tallied double-figure runs in five games and double-figure hits in 12 games in 2023.
  • Junior Jake Berger has posted a .316 batting average alongside 32 hits, 16 runs, seven doubles, and five home runs. He paces the league in sacrifice flies (four) and ranks seventh in homers (five). In Ivy only play, he stands fifth in average (.389), third in slugging (.750), third in OPS (1.215), third in hits (14), second in RBIs (12), seconds in doubles (four), and second in homers (three). He hit a key two-run home run in the Crimson's 3-2 win in 10 innings in game one at Penn (Mar. 24). Berger notched four hits in game two vs. Princeton (Apr. 4).
  • Junior Ben Rounds has posted a .297 batting average, 30 hits, 20 runs, seven doubles, five home runs, and 25 RBIs. He stands seventh in the Ancient Eight in home runs (five), fourth in walks (16), second in sacrifice flies (three), and ninth in RBIs (25). In Ivy only play, he leads the conference in walks (10) and stands fifth in OBP (.488), seventh in OPS (1.094), seventh in runs (10), and sixth in RBIs (10). Rounds notched a season-best four hits in game three at FAU (Mar. 12).
  • Junior Peter Messervy leads the Ivy League with 13 doubles and ranks fourth in the NCAA with 0.50 doubles per game. Messervy stands third in the conference in walks (18) and seventh in runs (23). In Ivy only play, he sits seventh in OBP (.475). He has hit .303 with 30 hits, 23 runs, and 12 RBIs. Messervy hit a go-ahead, bases-clearing double to help lead Harvard to a game two win over Dartmouth (Apr. 8).
  • Senior Logan Bravo has notched a .299 average with 32 hits, 23 runs, eight doubles, four homers, and 17 RBIs. In Ivy only play, he ranks eighth in the conference in average (.361), sixth in OBP (.477), eighth in OPS (1.088), seventh in runs (10), sixth in hits (13), and sixth in RBIs (10). He tallied three two-hit games in the Texas A&M-CC series (Mar. 16-18) before a 3-for-5 effort with the go-ahead home run in the 10th inning in the series opener with Penn (Mar. 24).
  • Senior Hunter Baldwin has hit .316 on the season with 24 hits, 18 runs, five doubles, and 14 RBIs. In conference play, he has posted a .346 average, nine hits, seven runs, and six RBIs. Baldwin launched a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth inning in Harvard's game one win at Dartmouth (Apr. 8), blasting his second career homer and first since March 2019.
  • Sophomore George Cooper has tallied a .315 batting average, while ranking ninth in the Ivy League in doubles (eight). He tallied a season-high four hits in game two at FIU (Mar. 4). Cooper went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a triple, and a double in game three at Penn (Mar. 26).
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Chris Clark ranks 12th in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings (13.97), while ranking first in the Ivy League in strikeouts (59). He has tallied seven or more strikeouts in six of his seven starts in 2023, including a career-high 11 strikeouts at Dartmouth (Apr. 8). Clark has registered 59 strikeouts over 38.0 innings pitched on the season. In Ivy play, he has posted a league-leading 29 strikeouts over 19.0 innings.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver ranks fifth in the Ivy League in strikeouts (43) and has notched a 4.66 ERA, throwing 38.2 innings on the year. He has posted six or more strikeouts in five of his last six starts.
  • Senior left-handed pitcher Harrison Stovern ranks fourth in the Ivy League in saves (two) after notching saves against Holy Cross (Mar. 28) and Northeastern (Apr. 4). Over his last six outings, he has allowed just two earned runs over 9.2 innings.
