Baseball Hosts Stonehill in Non-League Home Finale Tuesday

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University baseball hosts Stonehill College in its home non-league finale at O'Donnell Field on Tuesday, Apr. 18 at 3:00 p.m. (ESPN+) as the Crimson enters the contest having posted a 10-5 record since returning to the Northeast in late March.

What to Know

  • The Crimson (12-19) will meet the Skyhawks (5-25) in the first-ever meeting between the two programs as Harvard hosts a non-conference game at O'Donnell Field for the final time in its 2023 season.
  • Harvard is set to start RHP Will Jacobsen (0-2, 8.03 ERA) on the mound. Stonehill will counter with LHP Jonathan Rice (0-2, 16.76 ERA).
  • Although just 30 miles separate Harvard and Stonehill the teams will match up on the diamond for the first time. Stonehill – founded in 1948 – is competing at the Division I level for the first time in 2023 while Harvard – founded in 1636 – began competition in baseball in 1865.
  • Harvard ranks 16th in the NCAA in doubles per game (2.39) as a team while junior Peter Messervy stands 15th in the nation in doubles per game (0.47) as an individual. Messervy leads the Ivy League with 14 doubles. Harvard has hit at least two doubles in 23 games this year and knocked a season-high six in game two vs. FIU (Mar. 4).
  • As a team, Harvard leads the Ivy League in doubles (74) as well as sacrifice flies (15) and stands third in home runs (27). In Ivy play, Harvard ranks second in doubles (26) and OBP (.390). The Crimson has tallied double-figure runs in five games and double-figure hits in 13 games in 2023.
  • Junior Ben Rounds has posted a .298 batting average, 34 hits, 23 runs, nine doubles, five home runs, and 27 RBIs. He stands seventh in the Ancient Eight in doubles (nine), 10th in RBIs (27), third in walks (20), ninth in homers (five), and second in sacrifice flies (three). In Ivy only play, he leads the conference in walks (13) and stands fifth in OBP (.482), seventh in OPS (1.040), and eighth in runs (12). Rounds notched a season-best four hits in game three at FAU (Mar. 12).
  • Junior Jake Berger has posted a .284 batting average alongside 33 hits, 19 runs, seven doubles, and five home runs. He paces the league in sacrifice flies (four). In Ivy only play, he stands fifth in homers (three), sixth in RBIs (13), seventh in slugging (.596), and ninth in OPS (1.017). He hit a key two-run home run in the Crimson's 3-2 win in 10 innings in game one at Penn (Mar. 24). Berger notched four hits in game two vs. Princeton (Apr. 4).
  • Junior Peter Messervy leads the Ivy League with 14 doubles and ranks 15th in the NCAA with 0.47 doubles per game. Messervy stands third in the conference in walks (20). In Ivy only play, he sits ninth in OBP (.444) and fifth in walks (nine). Overall, he has hit .287 with 33 hits, 26 runs, and 13 RBIs. Messervy hit a go-ahead, bases-clearing double to help lead Harvard to a game two win over Dartmouth (Apr. 8).
  • Senior Logan Bravo has notched a .279 average with 34 hits, 23 runs, eight doubles, four homers, and 18 RBIs. In Ivy only play, he has hit .298 with 14 hits, 10 runs, and 11 RBIs. He tallied three two-hit games in the Texas A&M-CC series (Mar. 16-18) before a 3-for-5 effort with the go-ahead home run in the 10th inning in the series opener with Penn (Mar. 24).
  • Senior Hunter Baldwin has hit .315 on the season with 28 hits, 19 runs, six doubles, and 16 RBIs. In conference play, he ranks ninth in the conference in batting average (.343) and fourth in stolen bases (six). Baldwin launched a go-ahead grand slam in the ninth inning in Harvard's game one win at Dartmouth (Apr. 8), blasting his second career homer and first since March 2019.
  • Senior Will Jacobsen serves as a two-way player for the Crimson. At the plate, he has hit .299 with 23 hits, 10 runs, six doubles, two homers, and 21 RBIs. In Ivy play, ranks eighth in the league in average (.349) with 15 hits, eight runs, three doubles, and 11 RBIs. On the mound, he has thrown 24.2 innings over seven appearances and six starts. As a hitter, he posted six RBIs in game two of the FIU series (Mar. 4), and as a pitcher, he allowed just two runs over 6.0 innings in the Beanpot semifinals against Northeastern (Apr. 4).
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Chris Clark ranks 15th in the NCAA in strikeouts per nine innings (13.61), while ranking second in the Ivy League in strikeouts (63). He has tallied seven or more strikeouts in six of his eight starts in 2023, including a career-high 11 strikeouts at Dartmouth (Apr. 8). Clark has registered 63 strikeouts over 41.2 innings pitched on the season. In Ivy play, he ranks second in the league with 33 strikeouts over 22.2 innings.
  • Junior right-handed pitcher Jay Driver ranks fourth in the Ivy League in strikeouts (50) and has notched a 4.53 ERA, throwing 43.2 innings on the year. He has posted six or more strikeouts in six of his last seven starts.
  • Sophomore right-handed pitcher Sean Matson has tallied a 2.82 ERA in conference play, ranking eighth in the league, while standing fifth in the Ancient Eight in strikeouts (27) in Ivy play. Overall, he has notched a 5.36 ERA over 40.1 innings.
  • Senior left-handed pitcher Harrison Stovern ranks fourth in the Ivy League in wins (four) and fifth in saves (two) after notching saves against Holy Cross (Mar. 28) and Northeastern (Apr. 4). In Ivy play, he leads the conference in wins (three). Over his last seven outings, he has allowed three earned runs over 11.2 innings.
