Men’s Tennis Continues Ivy Play with Pair of Weekend Matches

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 15 Harvard Men's Tennis (13-5, 1-0 Ivy) will continue Ivy League play this weekend with a pair of matchups on Friday, April 7 and Sunday, April 9.  First, remaining on the road, the Crimson will travel to New Haven, CT to take on No. 72 Yale (10-5, 0-0 Ivy) on Friday at 3:00 p.m.  Harvard will then return home to host their first Ivy foe of the season as they take on Brown (13-9, 0-0 Ivy) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

What to Know

  • Opening their 2023 spring season with a slate of nationally ranked opponents and now beginning their Ivy League title defense, Harvard has looked strong this year sitting at 13-5 overall and 1-0 in Ivy play.
  • Last time out, the Crimson began their Ivy League season on the road at Dartmouth.  Harvard dominated, 6-1, securing the doubles point and five of the singles matches.  The Crimson were also leading at the No. 5 singles position before retiring the match.
  • In the most ITA Division I Men's Collegiate Tennis Team Rankings, the Crimson found themselves at No. 15.  Harvard has been consistent all spring, remaining inside the top-15 for the past nine weeks.
  • The singles and doubles polls were also updated this week and the Crimson were represented by a pair of singles players and the duo of Daniel Milavsky and Harris Walker breaking into the double's rankings at No. 86.  Henry von der Schulenburg and Walker have been the constant representatives in the singles poll at No. 29 and 31, respectively, this week.
  • Milavsky and Walker have broken into the top-90 of the doubles rankings after teaming up for the first time in the 2022-23 season just nine matches ago.  Competing at the No. 1 position, the duo has gone 6-1 overall and 4-1 against nationally ranked opponents.
  • Leading the team in doubles by seven match wins is the dominant pairing of Ronan Jachuck and Steven Sun.  Playing primarily at the No. 2 position, the duo is a remarkable 13-3 for the spring season and 16-3 overall for the 2022-23 season.
  • Playing all but two matches at the No. 1 position for singles, Walker leads the Crimson in singles wins and is the only player to hit double digits so far this spring as he sits at 11-4.
  • Milavsky, von der Schulenburg, and Valdemar Pape have also been consistent for the Crimson, all racking up eight singles wins.

For the Foes

  • Yale has begun the season 10-5 against nonconference foes as their matchup with the Crimson will be their first Ivy contest.  In their last week of nonconference play the Bulldogs went 2-0 against Santa Clara and St. John's.
  • The Bulldogs are currently ranked No. 72 in the ITA Division I Men's Collegiate Tennis Team Rankings.  Their 10 wins through 15 contests already matches their win total from last season when they finished sixth in the Ivy League standings.
  • The Crimson hold a substantial 74-26 lead over the Bulldogs in the all-time series, having won the last 22 matchups between the two squads.  When Harvard and Yale met in 2022, the Crimson swept the Bulldogs, 4-0.
  • Brown is currently 13-9 in the 2023 spring season, having lost their last two matches to close their nonconference schedule.  Prior to facing Harvard, the Bears will open up Ivy League play as they welcome Dartmouth.
  • Last season, Brown finished last in the Ivy League standings, going 0-7 in league play.  The Bears have looked improved this season, already besting their win total from 2022 by four victories.
  • Harvard holds a commanding 85-7 lead over Brown in the all-time series, including having won the last 10 matchups.  The two squads have already matchup once this season in the opening round of the ECAC tournament when the Crimson swept the Bears, 4-0.

The Crimson will remain home next weekend as they welcome a pair of top-30 nationally ranked squads to Beren Tennis Center.  On Saturday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m. the Crimson will face-off against No. 30 Cornell.  The following day, April 16, No. 11 Columbia will come to town at 1:00 p.m. for a rematch of the ECAC finals.  The top-15 matchup will be streamed on Cracked Racquets.
